Women's Volleyball Victorious on Senior Day

HARROGATE, Tenn. – On a day where three seniors were honored for their careers with the Lincoln Memorial University women's volleyball, the Lady Railsplitters were able to capture a thrilling five-set (19-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-22, 19-17) victory over Newberry on Saturday afternoon.
 
Senior Gabriela Abreu led the Lady Railsplitters with 16 kills in the match while posting a .233 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Emily Walter tallied her 10th double-double of the season with 25 assists and 11 digs. Libero Sevgi Koyuncu nearly recorded a double-double as she finished the match with 19 digs and eight assists.
 
The Lady Railsplitters jumped out to a 5-0 lead to begin the first set, but the Wolves were able to bring things to within one, 9-8. Using a four-point run, Newberry was able to grab the lead at 15-12. Trading points back and forth, the Wolves were able to create separation and capture the first set, 25-19.
 
The Wolves dominated the second set from the first serve of the set, pulling out to a 5-1 lead. Both programs traded runs of points, but Newberry was able to control the set and create separation with a 17-9 lead. Lincoln Memorial tried to mount a comeback, but the Wolves pulled away with the set, 25-16.
 
Looking to keep the game alive, the Lady Railsplitter dug in and were able to control the third as they opened with a 12-9 lead. Using little runs of points, LMU was able to keep the Wolves down as they took the third set, 25-21.
 
The Lady Railsplitters came out of the gates firing in the fourth as they seven-point run to make it 12-4 just moments after the first serve of the set. The Wolves bounced back as they were able to even things up at 14 all. The Splitters were able to keep control of the set as a four-point run by LMU gave the Splitters the fourth, 25-22.
 
A decisive fifth set came around and it started out with Newberry pulling out to a 4-1 lead before the Lady Railsplitters were able to pull within one. The Wolves then jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but a seven-point run gave the momentum of the set to the Splitters as they battled back and used a three-point run to win the set, 19-17.

The Lady Railsplitters will welcome Carson-Newman to Mary Mars Gymnasium on Tuesday, November 2 in South Atlantic Conference action. First serve is set for 7 p.m. EST.
