GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Lincoln Memorial University women's soccer team faced the Saints of Limestone Wednesday evening in the Palmetto state for the finale of the 2021 fall South Atlantic Conference regular season, falling 1-0.
A Wednesday evening No. 9 Catawba victory of Newberry meant that the Lady Railsplitters (7-6-2, 5-5-1 SAC) secured the No. 7 seed in this season's SAC Tournament. The Blue and Grey will travel to face the No. 2 Royals of Queens, who maintain home field advantage for Saturday's quarterfinal.
The Lady Railsplitters and Saints fought cautiously and defensively for much of Wednesday's regular season finale, as the lone goal came just on the stroke of halftime for Limestone. The Saints were given a penalty deemed to be just inside the box, as Limestone safely tucked the ball into the right-hand side of the LMU goal for the 1-nil advantage.
Sophomore keeper
Isabelle Zukaitis came up big for the Lady Railsplitters on a few occasions in the second half, keeping LMU in the contest.
The Saints ultimately held LMU at bay, taking all three points at home. Limestone secured the No. 6 overall seed and will travel to take on No. 3 seed Lenoir-Rhyne. No. 4 seed Carson-Newman will host No. 5 seed Wingate Saturday, as the No. 1 overall Indians of Catawba will host No. 8 seed Newberry in a rematch of tonight's fixture.
Saturday's quarterfinal in Charlotte against No. 2 seed Queens will be a rematch of Oct. 16's fixture, where the Royals defeated LMU 2-nil. The Lady Railsplitters will look for a revenge on Saturday evening at 5 p.m.
