Women's Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Thriller to Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial University women's volleyball got back on the road Tuesday as they traveled to nearby Carson-Newman, and battled for five sets (23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 16-18) before falling to the Eagles.

Senior Emily Walter tallied her second double-double of the season with 26 assists and 16 digs. Junior Karen Morris got the nod at libero and added 18 digs and six assists.

Julia Wheeler lead the Eagles with 18 kills on 52 attacks. She also recorded 18 digs for a double-double, but it was Abbey Hildenbrand that paced the Carson-Newman offense as she posted 41 assists and 11 digs.

The Lady Railsplitters were able to take a early 3-2 lead before the Eagles were able to use a six-point run in game one to take a commanding lead. LMU was not out of it yet as the Lady Railsplitters battled back to within two. Carson-Newman was able to keep the Blue and Gray away as they captured the first set, 25-23.

The tables turned at the beginning of the second set as the Lady Railsplitters were able to jump out to a 7-3 lead, but the Eagles were able to go on a run of their own to take an 8-7 lead. Both programs battled back-and-forth, but Carson-Newman was able to create some breathing room. The Eagles were able to keep the separation between them and LMU as they took set two, 25-19.

The Lady Railsplitters regrouped and came out attacking in set three. Carson-Newman was able to battle back to even things up at 8-8, but LMU looked to create separation and they did. The Lady Railsplitters were able to control the third in its entirety to win game three, 25-23, over the Eagles.

The Eagles looked to bounce back, and capture set four, but LMU had other plans as the Lady Railsplitters jumped out to a 10-5 lead to begin the fourth. The Eagles pulled within two, but it went onto be the Lady Railsplitters that forced a decisive game five after LMU took set four, 25-22.

The highly contested fifth set was a battle from the first whistle. Lincoln Memorial took an early lead, but Carson-Newman kept things interesting as they tied the score at five all. Points went onto be traded back and forth. Both teams had multiple chances at match point, but the defenses stood proud and held strong. Ultimately, the Eagles were able to land back-to-back kills to make it 18-16, giving them the fifth set and the match win.
