HARROGATE, Tenn. – Opening the contest with four straight three-pointers, the Lincoln Memorial University men's basketball program cruised to an 82-64 victory over Newberry on Wednesday afternoon inside Tex Turner Arena.
The Railsplitters got out to a hot start as they hit 6-of-7 from deep within minutes of the opening tip.
Me'Kell Burries got in the action early knocking down four three-pointers to put LMU up 22-4 early before going into the halftime break leading 43-23. The Railsplitters got the job done in the rebounding game as they controlled 39 rebounds compared to 31 from the Wolves.
The Splitter offense got going early and often. After taking a 22-4 lead at the 13:22 mark, Newberry started to climb back, but Lincoln Memorial was able to make key defensive stops to keep their double-digit lead. Using a 11-3 run, the Railsplitters were able to continue their dominating offense, going up 43-23 at the break.
Both programs traded baskets coming out of the break before Lincoln Memorial was able to extend their lead to 53-31 at the 16:00 mark. The Wolves tried to claw their way into the Railsplitter lead, but the Blue and Gray offense was able to match nearly each basket to preserve their lead. The Railsplitters never let go of the lead as they cruised to an 82-64 win over the Wolves.
Burries paced the Railsplitters on the afternoon with 23 points. The Newport, Kentucky native added two rebounds and two assists on the day. Three other Splitters tallied double-digits as graduate student
Alex Dahling recorded 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting, junior
Jordan Guest finished with 12 points and two rebounds and freshman
Matthew Sells tallying 12 points.
Jordan Walters and
Martez Brown lead Lincoln Memorial on the defensive end with eight rebounds each.
