Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Cedarville

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Lincoln Memorial University baseball won a thrilling 10-inning game in game one of the double header over Cedarville, while the Yellow Jackets stopped a comeback to even the day after defeating LMU in game two on Saturday afternoon at Lamar Hennon Field.

Game 1 – Lincoln Memorial 7, Cedarville 6 (10 Innings)

The Yellow Jackets got things going in the first as they loaded the bases early and forced a walk RBI to go up 1-0 in the top of the first. Cedarville extended their lead later in the inning and again in the second, going into the third inning with a 3-0 lead.

Lincoln Memorial's Kaston Harvey scored the first Splitter run after being drove in by an RBI single from Kevin McCarthy. A Cameron Bowen RBI double in the next at bat allowed the Railsplitters to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to one.

Cedarville's offense was able to keep production up in the fourth as they saw their lead rise to 5-2 over LMU, but Lincoln Memorial was able to tag one run in in the bottom of the frame to make the Cedarville lead 5-3.

The pitching of LMU was able to lock down the Yellow Jacket offense in the fifth as the Railsplitter offense went to work in the bottom of the frame. Ryan Kurth led the bottom of the fifth off with a double to left center before Cameron Powser was given first after being hit by the pitcher.

A Kaston Harvey RBI single was able to bring in Kurth and advanced Powser to third. McCarthy tallied his second RBI of the night after bringing in Powser from third, to even things up at 5 all going into the home stretch.

A quiet seventh inning lead to an eighth inning that saw just one run total between the programs as Cedarville regained the lead after a solo home run by Punzi put the Yellow Jackets back up, 6-5.

Much like earlier in the week, the Railsplitters saw themselves down by on at the start of the bottom of the ninth, but that did not fray away Lincoln Memorial as they were able to get the necessary runners in scoring position with a sacrifice fly by Kurth bringing in the tying run by Colin Goda, sending the game to extra innings.

Kevin Norton was able to go one, two, three in the top of the tenth, giving the Railsplitters a shot at the win in the bottom of the inning. Harvey was able to lay the single down to become the game-winning run on base. He then was able to get into scoring position, grabbing the steal to second and then stole third moments later. Goda was walked by the Yellow Jacket pitcher, bringing up Chris Hall to bat. Hall was able to lay down the RBI single, getting Harvey into home, giving the Railsplitters their second walk-off win this season.

Game 2 – Cedarville 3, Lincoln Memorial 2

The Yellow Jackets wasted no time in game two as they quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. The Railsplitters answered in the bottom of the frame as Carson Boles tallied the first Splitter run of game two.

The battle in the second game of the doubleheader came on the pitcher's mound as both starters forced the routine groundout or flyouts or struck out the side in the second, third and fourth before the offense's saw runs in the fifth.

Cedarville extended their lead by one after a sacrifice fly brought in the runner at third. The Railsplitters answered with a run of their own to cut the lead to one, but the Yellow Jackets relied on the arm of Gillis as he was able to silence the LMU bats for the remainder of the afternoon as Cedarville won game two.
