Railsplitters Drop Doubleheader to Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. -- The Lincoln Memorial University baseball program fell in a thriller in game one on the day before Lander was able to get the bats going late in game two to take the doubleheader, and series, on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1 – Lander 7, Lincoln Memorial 6

The Bearcats got things going quickly in the first as they took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI double from Jenkins. The Railsplitters took a bit to get going but found their first run on a sacrifice groundout by Carson Boles that brought in Chris Hall.

Lander answered in the bottom of the third as they tallied three to take a 4-1 lead into the fourth, where things were clicking for the LMU offense.

Sam Mast led off the inning and was able to lay down a single to centerfield. Kevin McCarthy then followed up with another single to center, giving the Railsplitters a runner in scoring position. Collin Goda notched a single to left field scoring Mast, then an error by the Bearcat fielder allowed McCarthy to reach home cutting into the Lander lead, 4-3.

Goda stole second, then on the next at bat, Hall was able to drop a single to right field with Goda booking it for home, evening the score at 4 all going into the fifth.

The Bearcats were able to retake the lead after a Jenkins single scored Dupert, giving Lander a 5-4 lead. The Bearcats then furthered their lead with an RBI single from Streater to make it 6-4 Lander.

Both offenses went quiet over the middle of the contest until Lander was able to increase their lead to 7-4 after another RBI single from Jenkins.

The Railsplitters responded in the top of the eighth has Austin Cole sent one over the right field wall for a two-run shot, cutting the Bearcat lead to 7-6.

The Bearcats went to their closer in the ninth and was able to give Lander a win in game one, 7-6.

Game 2 – Lander 2, Lincoln Memorial 0

The programs got out to a tough match up on the pitching mound in game two. Alex Brewer got the start on the hill and went for 5.0 innings, giving up four hits and two runs. Nance got the start for Lander, going the complete game and striking out six in the process.

The Blue and Gray offense was held quite for course of the game, but got some looks early in the fourth before the Bearcat defense was able to secure the outs needed.

In the fifth, the Railsplitters started the inning off with a walk from Cameron Powser before a Tucker Hagan single put Powser in scoring position. Goda was able to lay down the sacrifice bunt to get the LMU runners on second and third. The arm of Nance was able to get Lander out of the inning.

The Bearcats broke the scoreless tie in the fifth after DeRubeis sent one over the left field wall for a two-run home run, giving Lander a 2-0 lead.

Lander was able to hold onto the lead as the Bearcat pitching staff kept the Splitter bats at bay, as they took the win in game two.
