LMU Women's Basketball Drops one to Newberry in Double Overtime

Mikayla Kuehne double-doubles and Flowers and Davisson also score in double-figures

HARROGATE, TENN. – Forty minutes was not enough to decide this afternoon's game between the LMU women's basketball team and the visiting Newberry Wolves. The two teams battled into double overtime, before the Wolves came out on top 74-72.

Newberry got off to a hot start, opening up a 9-2 lead minutes into the quarter. A three-pointer by Irelynn Davisson got the Lady Railsplitters back into the game. After a Wolves basket, LMU responded with a 7-0 run, with Lauren Flowers scoring five of those points. The two teams traded buckets the rest of the quarter and Mikayla Kuehne hit a mid-range jumper with six seconds left to tie the game at 18 heading into the second 10 minutes of play.

Kuehne opened the second period with another jumper to give the Blue and Gray the lead. The Wolves responded with a 7-0 run to retake the lead, but a jump shot from Davisson stopped the run. Newberry pushed their lead up to eight at the break, leading 34-26.

The Wolves pushed their lead up to double-digits early in the third quarter, until another Davisson jumper and a three from Lindsay Proffitt brought it back down to five. After a Newberry three, Proffitt responded with a three of her own to keep the deficit at 39-34. The Wolves again pushed their lead to 10, but once again the Lady Railsplitters responded, this time with back-to-back threes from Davisson and Lexi Kiser. Newberry however, would end the quarter on a 7-2 run to take a nine-point lead with ten minutes to play.

The Lady Railsplitters opened the fourth quarter on a roll, starting the period on a 12-3 run, with Kuehne and Flowers both hitting threes to highlight the run, making it a one-point game. After a Newberry layup, Lexi Kiser hit another big three to tie the game at 62. The Wolves got another bucket, but Flowers responded with 52 seconds left to tie the game again. Newberry had a chance to win in regulation, but their three-pointer bounced off to send the game to overtime.

Kuehne again ignited the offense in overtime, knocking down a free throw and a jump shot a minute later to give LMU the three-point advantage. Newberry scored four straight, but Kassidy Kenny absorbed the contact to hit the and-1 layup. The Wolves got another jumper to tie the game and send it to double overtime tied at 70.

Both defenses buckled down in the second overtime period, allowing only six points total. Following a Newberry free throw, Addi Kirkpatrick layed one in to give LMU the lead once again. The Wolves got another layup and a free throw to retake the lead. The Lady Railsplitters got two chances at the win, but Irelynn Davisson's contested floater rimmed out, and after a fight for the rebound, the ball was hit out to Lexi Kiser who launched a deep three as time expired that fell just short and bounced off the front of the rim.

Mikayla Kuehne went for a double-double with 17 points and 10 assists. She also added six rebounds. Lauren Flowers, who played all 50 minutes, scored 16 points on 7-10 shooting and grabbed six boards. Davisson contributed 14 points and four assists. Proffitt had eight points, and Kenny scored seven off the bench, while Kiser had six points off the bench.
