Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – Facing a Newberry team for the second time this week, the LMU women's basketball team knew they were in for another close game. Coming off their double overtime thriller on Monday, the two teams again engaged in a closely contested game, and once again the Wolves came out on top 67-59.
After Newberry opened the game with two straight threes,
Irelynn Davisson responded with one of her own to open the scoring for LMU. After another Wolves bucket,
Mikayla Kuehne hit a three of her own to cut the deficit down even more. The two teams were scoreless for a few minutes before
Lindsay Proffitt hit the third three of the game for the Lady Railsplitters to give them their first lead of the game. Newberry responded to retake the lead, but layups from Proffitt and
Lauren Flowers gave the lead right back to LMU. A late three by the Wolves gave them the lead back and took a 16-14 advantage into the second period.
The two teams traded buckets to start the second quarter before another Proffitt hit two three-pointers in a minute and a half to give LMU the lead once again. Layups from Kuehne and Proffitt pushed their lead up to six midway through the quarter. The Lady Railsplitters withstood a late Newberry run to take a 32-30 lead heading into the break.
Newberry opened the second half by taking a three-point lead, but Davisson answered back again from distance to retie the game. The Wolves kept attacking, answering any run LMU had and opening up their lead up to 49-44 at the end of the quarter.
Lincoln Memorial came out in the fourth quarter and quickly tied the game behind another three from Proffitt and two free throws from Davisson. After trading baskets for a few minutes, Proffitt hit an and-1 jump shot and free throw to give LMU the lead once again at 54-53. Newberry responded with a 6-1 run to take the lead back. Two free throws from Flowers got LMU within two, but that was a close as they would get the rest of the way, as the Wolves would close it out with free throws and take the eight-point victory.
Proffitt led all scorers with 20 points, on 7-10 shooting and 4-7 from distance.
Lauren Flowers scored 16 and grabbed five rebounds, while Davisson netted 11 points.
Mikayla Kuehne pulled down a team-high nine boards.
