HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team looked to continue the midweek success, but West Virginia State was able to bring in the game winner in the eighth to lead the Yellow Jackets to a win on Wednesday afternoon.
Ethan Bobo got the starting nod on a cloudy Wednesday afternoon, but the freshman made quick work in the first, allowing just one hit before forcing the Yellow Jackets to hit into a double play.
Chris Hall lead the first off for the Railsplitters, getting walked in his first appearance before later advancing to second on a single from
Carson Boles. The next batter up,
Sam Mast, was able to notch the RBI single to left center to put the Splitters up 1-0.
West Virginia State responded in the second, picking up one run before getting struck out of the side by Bobo.
Lincoln Memorial looked to capitalize on a pair of Yellow Jacket errors in the third. The bottom of the frame started with a pitching change for WVSU before the new pitcher was able to force a ground out. After notching a hit straight back to the pitcher, Hall was able to reach first after the WVSU pitcher overthrew the bag. Hall went onto advance to third on another error by the pitcher before the Yellow Jacket defense was able to get out of the inning.
The Yellow Jackets found home plate again in the fifth as a single to right center by Ball was able to score Kay, but Ball tried to extend the play before the Splitters' defense was able to tag him out. The Railsplitters bounced back in the bottom of the frame as
Brandon Parrott was walked before a sacrifice bunt from D.J. Alexander, Jr. was able to advance Parrott to scoring position.
A passed ball moved Parrott to third with
Tucker Hagan at the plate. Hagan was able to connect, but flied out, allowing Parrott to tag up and advance home, evening things up at the park.
The contest stayed quiet till the eighth inning as
Beau Nichols was able to get the first batter on a swinging strikeout before Paulsen gave the Yellow Jackets a runner on third from a triple to left center. A double later on in the inning was able to bring hom Paulsen, giving WVSU a 3-2 lead.
The Railsplitters made one final push in the ninth as they were able to get runners on and in scoring position, but it was not enough as the Yellow Jackets were able to secure the win, 3-2, over LMU.
