WINGATE, N.C. – The LMU women's lacrosse team traveled east across state lines into North Carolina to take on nationally ranked Wingate. The 25th ranked Bulldogs proved to be too much for the Lady Railsplitters as they won 19-3.
The two teams traded goals to start the game, as
Melanie Cascio answered a Wingate goal with one of her own to tie the game at one. The Bulldogs responded with six straight goals to push their lead to 7-1. LMU got a late goal in the first quarter, courtesy of
Avery Van Der Ziel, as she netted one off a pass from
Jolee Davis. Wingate scored four goals to end the first half to head into the halftime break up 11-2.
The Bulldogs scored eight consecutive goals throughout the third and fourth quarters to increase their advantage to 19-2. The Lady Railsplitters got a goal from
Jaedyn Ryba with 43 seconds remaining to bring the score to 19-3, and Wingate closed out the game from there to secure the win.
Cascio, Van Der Ziel, and Ryba all scored once, and Davis tallied the lone assist for LMU. Cascio and
Sage Leax both fielded two groundballs, and
Elle Miller and
Keegan Gillman combined to save eight shots in goal.
