CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The quest for the four-peat was completed as the Lincoln Memorial University men's volleyball team swept the Daemen Wildcats in the IVA Tournament Championship, 3-0, on Saturday evening.
The Railsplitters were able to come out firing in their quest for the four-peat as they took an early 7-2 lead into a Daemen timeout. The Wildcats found their groove offensively out of the timeout as they pulled to within two. Using their high-octane offense and defense, Lincoln Memorial was able to pull away in the first set, 20-14. Daemen was able to pull back to within three, but the Splitters held off the Wildcat attack to take set one.
Daemen tallied the first point of the second and the set quickly became a back-and-forth affair until LMU was able to use a four-point run to take a 9-6 lead. The Wildcats stromed back to even the contest up at 14-all, but the Railsplitters did not back down as they then raced out to a 22-17 lead into a Wildcat timeout. Both programs traded points out of the timeout and a kill from
Justin Sharfenaker gave the Splitters a two set advantage, 25-19.
Like the first set, Lincoln Memorial quickly worked to a 7-3 lead, causing Daemen to burn a timeout early. The programs quickly traded points again, but the Railsplitters were able to continue their hot offense, jumping out to a six point lead, 11-5. Lincoln Memorial did not look back as they were able to use a five-point run to take a commanding 23-11 lead before cementing the four-peat on a kill from
Johansen Negron to give the Splitters the championship match, 25-13.
