Dahlonega, GA - LMU's Women's Basketball team continues its winning way by defeating Clayton State at the UNG Nighthawk Classic this evening, 77-64. This makes it three in-a-row for the Lady Railsplitters to start the season.
In the first quarter, LMU jumped out to a 4-point lead but could not pull away from the Lakers. CSU would catch LMU at 6-6 but the Lady Railsplitters would comeback and pull ahead by five, then by eight at 16-8. CSU would fight back and close within one at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was all LMU. The Lady Railsplitters would jump out five points and never look back. The half ended 36-30 with LMU having, at one point, a nine-point lead on a
Matty Tanner three-pointer. Most of the scoring was done in the paint by Geo Rios,
Lauren Flowers,
Jordan Maney, and
Zyan Smith.
LMU continued to work the inside pushing the lead to 11with 4:41 left in the quarter. Maney, Tanner, Rios, with
Chloe Savage and
Sophie Henry kept pushing the score in the paint. Tanner got a 3-pointer with 5 minutes left in the quarter. The quarter ended with a Smiddy jumper with 3 seconds left. 56-43.
Rios started the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer at just under 8 minutes. LMU continued to score in the paint pushing the lead to 16 with a Smiddy jumper at 2:34 to go in the game. Many, Savage, Flowers, and Rios kept the pressure on inside and LMU finished their scoring with a Rios 3-pointer at the 0:14 mark. 77-64 was the final.
Geo Rios had 18 in the game including being 2-3 from beyond the arc, followed by
Jordan Maney and
Matty Tanner (3-6 3-pointers) each with 15.Â
Alexa Smiddy had 10 points including four free throws. Rios collected seven rebounds with Maney having six.
LMU will face host North Georgia at 4pm on Saturday, the 18th.
