LMU Women's Basketball Takes Down Wingate

Wingate, NC - LMU Women's Basketball earned their second straight South Atlantic Conference (SAC) win this afternoon by defeating Wingate by a score of 68-62.  This moves LMU to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in SAC play.  Wingate falls to 5-3, 1-1 SAC.

Statistically, the game was fairly close.  LMU shot 40.3% from the floor and Wingate shot 39.7%.  LMU grabbed four more offensive rebounds than Wingate at 12-8 and LMU had three fewer turnovers.

Jordan Maney started things off with a 2-point jumper in the first ten seconds of the game.  Wingate tied the game with with a layup a minute later but layups by Chloe Savage and Geo Rios put the Railsplitters ahead for good at 6-2.  A 3-pointer by Lauren Flowers, a couple layups by Savage, and two 3-pointers by Alexa Smiddy put LMU up by six at the end of the first quarter, 19-12.

Geo Rios would open the scoring in the second quarter with a 3-pointer to put LMU up by 10.  Wingate would fight back and get within one of LMU, but Smiddy and Savage would hit baskets and Flowers would drop in the next twelve points to give LMU a 13-point lead.  Wingate would score the next five points to close out the third quarter, 38-30.

The Bulldogs would come out strong in the third quarter outscoring LMU 16-14.  LMU would open the quarter with a Maney jumper and a Smiddy 3-pointer.  Rios, Smiddy, and Savage would add nine, but Wingate chipped away at the lead to draw within six by the end of the quarter, 52-46.  

Wingate would open the fourth with a jumper to close within four.  But a Flowers layup would got the lead back to six.  The Bulldogs would comeback with two layups to close the gap to two, but baskets by Maney and Savage pushed the lead back to six.  LMU held the lead by making six free-throws in the final minute to end the game, 68-62.

Alexa Smiddy led all scorers with 19, followed by Lauren Flowers getting 17 and seven rebounds for LMU, and Chloe Savage getting 16 plus eight rebounds.

The Lady Railsplitters will host Union this week on Wednesday at 5:30pm, then travel to Limestone on Saturday, Decembar 16, for a 2pm game.
