HARROGATE, Tenn. – The No. 20 Lincoln Memorial softball team beat Ohio Dominican 3-2 in eight innings before run-ruling Maryville on Saturday in the first day of the LMU Invitational.
Game 1: Lincoln Memorial 3-2 (8 innings)
The nationally-ranked Railsplitters got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, as
Sterre den Duijn scored following a
Madison Henry bunt single and throwing error by the Ohio Dominican pitcher. The Panthers responded with two runs in the fourth inning, but the hosts knotted the score back up thanks to a
Victoria Conley double down the right field line that scored Henry in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
The score remained tied until
Sierra Hucklebee's nailed a hard grounder to second base for a walkoff single in the bottom of the eighth. Henry crossed home plate for the winning run.
Starting pitcher
Emma Frost took the win, allowing only 4 hits and 2 runs in 8 innings of work while striking out 7 Panthers. Henry's two runs scored and Hucklebee's two hits paced the Railsplitter offense in the first game of the twinbill.
Game 2: Lincoln Memorial 9-1 (5 innings)
Katy Pozzuto got the scoring going for Lincoln Memorial in the second inning with an RBI single that scored
McKenzie Henry.
Kelsie Tuggle put the finishing touches on the 5-run inning with a 2-run double that plated Conley and
Anna Kate Reichter.
The Railsplitters put another crooked number on the board in the fourth inning, as
McKenzie Henry knocked an RBI single through the left side before bases loaded walks from den Duijn and Pozzuto allowed a total of three runs to score in the frame. den Duijn walked in another run in the fifth inning to invoke the mercy rule.
Starting pitcher
Hayley Tamaro picked up the win, scattering three hits and allowing one run across five innings of work.
McKenzie Henry, Tuggle and den Duijn knocked in two runs each to lead the offensive production.
