HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial softball team split a doubleheader with Mars Hill on Wednesday afternoon at Dorothy Neely Field, dropping Game 1 by a score of 5-2 before triumphing 7-5 in Game 2.
The Railsplitters (20-13, 6-4 South Atlantic Conference) got 3 hits each from
Katy Pozzuto and
Anna Kate Reichter in the second contest to salvage a split over the Lions (12-15, 4-8 SAC).
Game 1: Mars Hill 5, Lincoln Memorial 2
Scoreless through 4 innings, the visiting Lions put a single run on the board in the Top of the 5
th before exploding for 4 runs on a Farley Park grand slam in the 6
th to open up a 5-0 lead. The Lady Railsplitters responded with a pair of runs in their half of the 6
th inning, highlighted by a
McKenzie Henry solo homerun, but they weren't able to complete the comeback.
Mars Hill's Alyssa Poston pitched a complete game to get the win and improve to 5-3 on the year, while Lincoln Memorial's
Emma Frost was hit with the loss after allowing the 5 runs and striking out 12 in 7.0 innings. Henry's blast was 1 of only 3 hits in the opener for the home team and the only of the extra-base variety.
Game 2: Lincoln Memorial 7, Mars Hill 5
Both teams scored a trio of runs through the first 2 frames, but a 3-run 3
rd inning for the hosts would propel the Railsplitters to victory.
Katie Tuggle hit an RBI double, and
Katy Pozzuto followed with an RBI single to give the Railsplitters a 2-1 edge after the 1
st inning.
Madison Henry tied the score at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly in the 2
nd before
Victoria Conley's 2-run single and another sac fly by
Madison Henry in the 3
rd put Lincoln Memorial ahead 6-3. Pozzuto added another RBI single in the 4
th inning for an insurance run.
Hayley Tamaro (7-6) picked up the win after striking out 4 and allowing 3 earned runs in a complete game effort. Mars Hill's starter Kayla Gallagher fell to 3-5 with the loss giving up 6 runs in 2.1 innings of work.
