SALISBURY, N.C. – The Lincoln Memorial softball team swept a doubleheader at Catawba's Whitley Field on Saturday, taking the 1
st game 6-5 before shutting out the Indians 5-0 in Game 2.
The Railsplitters (22-13, 8-4 South Atlantic Conference) had to come back in the later innings of the opener, as
Anna Kate Reichter hit a go-ahead double in the 6
th inning, before easily disposing of Catawba (16-12, 4-6 SAC) in the nightcap behind
Hayley Tamaro's dominant pitching and
Sterre den Duijn's pair of homeruns.
Game 1: Lincoln Memorial 6, Catawba 5
The majority of the game's scoring occurred in the 3
rd inning, when both teams crossed the plate 4 times. Lincoln Memorial's
McKenzie Henry got the scoring started with an RBI single before den Duijn hit a run-scoring double and
Katy Pozzuto pounded a 2-run double to put the Lady Railsplitters ahead 4-1 after the Top of the 3
rd.
Trailing 5-4 entering the 5
th, Pozzuto hit an RBI single to tie the score before Reichter's go-ahead double in the 6
th to give the visitors the win. Pozzuto led the Railsplitter offense with 2 hits and 3 RBI in the contest.
Emma Frost (12-6) picked up the win for Lincoln Memorial after striking out 6 in the complete game effort. Catawba's Alexandra Baquie dropped to 12-4 while allowing 6 runs in 7.0 innings.
Game 2: Lincoln Memorial 5, Catawba 0
A 3-run 4
th inning and 2-run 5
th were more than enough offensive support for Tamaro in her 1
st 7-inning shutout of the year.
Madison Henry hit an RBI single and
Gracie Palmer stole home after den Duijn's solo homerun for the trio of Lincoln Memorial runs in the Top of the 4
th. Another blast from den Duijn, this time a 2-run shot in the 5
th, added insurance runs for the Lady Railsplitters.
Tamaro scattered 4 singles in the efficient outing to improve to 8-6 on the season, while Catawba's Savannah Beaver (2-5) took the loss allowing 3 runs in 4.0 innings.
