@LMUbaseball Splits Doubleheader to Begin Conference Play Against Catawba

Harrogate, Tenn.- The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team lost the first and won the second game in their doubleheader on Saturday. Heading into the day, the Railsplitters were 10-2, looking to open up SAC play strong against a 9-6 (3-0) Catawba team.

In the first of the two, the Indians would score in the top of the first on a double that would go unanswered until the bottom of the fourth inning where Kasten Harvey would blast a homerun to even the score at 1-1. The low-scoring bout would continue thanks to effective outings by both starting pitchers, including an impressive thirteen strikeouts from Lincoln Memorial's Patrick Queener.

A few miscues from the Railsplitters in the top of the 7th would give Catawba the lead back. Lincoln Memorial would find themselves with their rally caps on heading into the bottom of the 9th, down 2-1. Ryan Kurth would lead the charge with a double to start the inning and soon after Cameron Powser would step up to the plate to pinch-hit with runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Alex Kowalski would force the game into extra innings. After a scoreless 10th, the Indians would cash in on a double with the Railsplitters unable to answer in the bottom half of the inning, coming up short, and losing by a score of 3-2.

The second game, only slated to last seven innings, would begin in a similar fashion with the Catawba Indians taking an early 2-0 lead. Lincoln Memorial would change this quickly going into the bottom of the 5th. Carson Boles began the inning with a single up the middle. Ryan Kurth's single several at-bats later would tie the score up at 2-2. A few lapses from the Indians compiled combined and an Andrew Keene hit would allow the Railsplitters to put a seven spot in the frame.

Gavin Whitehurst would get one of his two hits of the game in the bottom of the 6th to help extend the lead to 9-2. Relief pitcher Will Shelton combined with solid defense would shut down any hope for a comeback by the Indians in the top of the 7th.

Lincoln Memorial moved to 11-3 on the season and will be back in action for the third game of the series against Catawba tomorrow, Sunday, March 5th, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 PM.
