Harrogate, TN - The days are growing shorter and colder. Indoor track and field season has finally arrived. The Lincoln Memorial men's and women's track and field teams are gearing up for their first meet of the season on Saturday. The Railsplitters will travel to Danville, KY on Saturday for the Centre First Chance meet at Centre College. Often referred to as a "rust buster," the first meet of the season provides a good barometer of how athletes' performances from last year may carry over into the upcoming season. Lincoln Memorial returns a pair of all-region selections from a year ago.
Luis Borkey and
Sterling Webb were both named All-Region by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) last season and both return this year.
Borkey, a Wiesbaden, Germany native, finished his debut season as the number two all-time 800 meter runner in program history, trailing only Railsplitter alum
Roberto Fajardo. The All-Southeast Region honoree was also the silver medalist at last year's South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships in the same event. He was the lone member of the program to walk away with a top three finish to end the season.
Webb, a three-time recipient of All-Region honors, closed her first season in blue and gray as the university record holder in eight different events. Awarded All-Region in the heptathlon, the Mount Juliet, TN native took fourth place at the outdoor championships, also hitting the provisional mark for the outdoor national championships.
Both the men's and women's teams were tabbed seventh in the South Atlantic Conference preseason poll, with
Luis Borkey and
Avery Hatfield named "players to watch" on the men's team, and
Sterling Webb and
Nevaeh Kerns named "players to watch" on the women's team.
