Baseball takes two of three at Lenoir-Rhyne

Hickory, NC - The Lincoln Memorial baseball team took the road for a weekend conference series against Lenoir-Rhyne following a sweep of Mars Hills and a midweek victory over Erskine College. The Railsplitters entered the series with a record of 9-2, with a 3-0 mark in conference play. Lenoir-Rhyne entered with a 10-2 record, only blemished by a match up with #2 North Greenville, and a conference opening game against Limestone.

Game one on Friday favored the Bears. Each team tallied two runs in the first inning to leave the score knotted at 2-2 after one. Lenoir-Rhyne added four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-2 lead. The onslaught continued in the third inning as the Bears peppered three runs onto the tally, bringing the score to 9-2. The Railsplitters added one run in the fourth to cut into the deficit, 9-3, but the Bears nullified the run in the fifth, adding another of their own to re-extend the lead to 10-3. In the sixth inning, Kasten Harvey connected on a three run moon shot, cutting the score back to within a respectable margin 10-6. However, Lenoir-Rhyne answered with three of its own, bringing the game to its final score of 13-6.

After falling in the first game, the Railsplitters woke up, and so did their bats. Game two was a completely different story offensively for Lincoln Memorial. It was evident from the jump that it was going to be a good game for the Railsplitters as Cameron Bowen absolutely blasted a grand slam in the first inning, bringing home Carson Boles, Kasten Harvey, and Chris Hall to take an early 4-0 lead. After retiring the side, Lincoln Memorial took back over on offense, much to the dismay of the Bears, adding two more runs when Harvey drove in Collin Goda, and Boles drove in Harvey to give the Railsplitters a 6-0 advantage through just two innings of action. Lenoir-Rhyne refused to lay over, tallying six runs over the third and fourth innings to tie the game at 6-6. Again, the Railsplitters responded with a homer. Boles connected on a two run shot in the fifth inning to give Lincoln Memorial an 8-6 lead. However, the Bears answered back with three runs in the sixth inning to take their first lead of the game, 9-8. The final two innings belonged to Lincoln Memorial. The Railsplitters added eight runs across the eighth and ninth innings, while allowing only three more, securing a 16-12 victory in game two to split the series.

With the series on the line, Lincoln Memorial put the nail in the coffin. With the game knotted at 1-1 heading into the third, something clicked for the Railsplitter offense as they drove in nine runs in the inning to take total control of the game 10-1 heading into the fourth inning. Unable to find any offense, the Bears relinquished the sticks to the Railsplitters, allowing them to extend the lead to 12-1 after four innings. Lenoir-Rhyne attempted to fight back in the sixth inning by adding three runs, but resistance was futile. Lincoln Memorial maintained its offensive clinic into the seventh inning as the lead swelled to 20-4, allowing the Railsplitters to run-rule the Bears, improving to 11-3 overall with a 5-1 mark in conference play.
