Harrogate, TN - After posting a 3-1 record last week, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back at home for the first time since the start of the season squaring off against the Kentucky State Thorobreds. The Railsplitters were 11-3 prior to the game, while the Thorobreds were 7-6.
For the first four innings, the game belonged to Kentucky State. However, from the bottom of the fourth until the end of the game, it was all blue and silver. The Thorobreds jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the top of the fourth inning. Trailing 4-0, Lincoln Memorial tallied its first run of the game when
Austin Epperson drove in
Cameron Bowen on a triple., cutting the score to 4-1, where it would remain until the bottom of the fifth.
Chris Hall connected on his second triple of the game, driving in Colin Goda to cut the deficit to two runs, 4-2. Both teams posted goose eggs in the sixth before the Railsplitters got back to work in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Kasten Harvey drove Hall in on a ground-out for Lincoln Memorial's third run of the game. Trailing 4-3,
Carson Boles stepped to the plate and connected on a solo-shot rocket over the wall, tying the score at 4-4 late in the game. After retiring the Thorobreds in the top of the eighth, Lincoln Memorial's game-winning run was scored in the bottom of the eighth when Goda drove in
Mitch Petzelt on a double to center field. With
David Brian Ellison on the mound to close, Kentucky State was silenced in the final two innings, allowing Lincoln Memorial to escape with a narrow 5-4 victory in the midweek contest, ahead of a conference weekend series with UVA-Wise.
Chris Hall led Lincoln Memorial with three hits and one RBI. He was followed by
Carson Boles, with one hit, one RBI (home run).
Cameron Bowen added a hit and one RBI.
Austin Epperson added one hit and one RBI. Colin Goda added one hit and one RBI, the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Ryan Kurth also added one hit.
Peyton Armour got the start on the mound, going 3.1 IP with seven hits, four runs, four earned, with two walks, and two strikeouts.
Colin Murphy went 3.2 IP with two hits, zero runs, zero earned, with no walks, and seven strikeouts.
Carter White went for .1 IP, allowing one hit and one walk.
David Brian Ellison was brought in to close, allowing zero hits, zero runs, zero earned, with zero walks, and one strikeout.
The Railsplitters will be back in action at home for a weekend series with UVA-Wise this weekend.
