Harrogate, TN - After staving off Kentucky State earlier this week and being featured in multiple top-25 baseball polls, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back on the diamond this weekend for a three game conference series with visiting UVA-Wise. With inclement weather in the area on Friday, the game schedule shifted around a little bit. The first game was played on Saturday, with a double-header held on Sunday. Lincoln Memorial entered the series with an 11-3 record, including a 5-1 mark in conference play.
Game one was the only game Lincoln Memorial won in the series. The Cavaliers took control in the top of the first inning, driving in two runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Railsplitters responded with two runs of their own.
Carson Boles drove in
Chris Hall, and
Cameron Bowen drove in Boles to knot the game at 2-2 heading into the second inning. UVA-Wise continued to find success on the sticks, tallying three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-2 lead. The score remained 5-2 until the bottom of the fourth when the Railsplitters bats came alive.
Kasten Harvey blasted a grand slam, bringing in Hall, Colin Goda, and
Sam Mast, giving Lincoln Memorial a 6-5 lead. After retiring the Cavs and getting back on offense,
Ryan Kurth extended the Railsplitters lead to 7-5, driving in
Austin Epperson. UVA-Wise added it final run of the game in the 6th inning before the Railsplitters added three more in the seventh. Hall drove in
Mitch Petzelt, Harvey brought Mast home, and Bowen drove in Goda to bring the game to its final score, 11-6.
The following two games didn't go as well for Lincoln Memorial. Although the pitching and fielding for the Railsplitters limited the Cavs to just 11 runs over the course of the double-header, the bats just weren't there. Lincoln Memorial only managed six runs across the next two games, dropping each. Game two was taken by UVA-Wise 3-2, in a highly competitive defensive showdown, and game three was won by the Cavs 8-4.
The series moved Lincoln Memorial to 13-5 on the season with a 6-3 mark in SAC play. The Railsplitters are slated to take on the Lee University Flames at home on Wednesday. Lincoln Memorial is currently #21 in the nation according to DII Baseball Insider and the NCBWA. The Railsplitters come in at #9 in the Massey Ratings. The Flames were ranked
just outside of the top 25 (#26).
