Railsplitters conquer Cavs

Wise, VA - Following a cancelation from earlier this season, the Lincoln Memorial men's basketball team was on the road at UVA-Wise just two days after a heartbreaking loss at Newberry, seeking a bounce back win as the regular season draws to a close. The Railsplitters entered the game with a 19-7 record, including a 13-4 mark in conference play. The Cavaliers entered with a 10-15 record and a 6-11 mark in SAC play.

The first half of Monday's game began with the Railsplitters racing out to a 9-4 run. The lead swelled to 17-8 before the Cavs cut the lead back to four points on the heels of an 8-3 run, 20-16. Lincoln Memorial's lead grew to 10 points at 30-20 with just over 4:30 remaining in the half. UVA-Wise attempted to chip away, but the Railsplitters would maintain a nine point lead at the half, 35-26. Matthew Sells led Lincoln Memorial in the first half with nine points. Wes Enis also contributed on offense, aiding the Railsplitters in maintaining a lead at the break. Chase Rankin went down with an apparent ankle injury in the waning moments of the first half.

The lead remained at nine points in the first four minutes of the second half as the score grew to 39-30. The Cavaliers chipped away once more, drawing back to within striking distance at 42-38, but just as quickly as UVA-Wise came back, Lincoln Memorial began to pour it on. The Railsplitters went on a 22-3 run over the course of the next five minutes, jumping out to a 23 point lead, 64-41. The Cavs would only get as close as 18 points to the lead for the remainder of the game, with the score resting at 68-50 with 5:51 left in the game. From there, Lincoln Memorial outscored UVA-Wise 18-11 to secure a 25 point victory, 86-61.

Lincoln Memorial was lights out in the second half of the game, scoring 51 of its 86 points in the back end. The Railsplitters scored on 61% of their attempts in the second half of the game, inevitably pulling away for the win.

The Railsplitters were led in scoring by Wes Enis with 19 points. He was followed by Osmar Garcia-Araujo with 16 points. Matthew Sells added 12 points with three made three pointers. Jordan Walters and Martez Brown added 11 points each with Brown adding 10 rebounds to secure his national-best 18th double-double of the season. Chase Rankin added six points, all in the first half, before going down in the final minutes of the first half due to an apparent ankle injury. He did not return to play for the second half. Thomas Allard added four points. Luke Bartemes added three points. Elijah Bredwoof and Me'Kell Burries chipped in two points each to round out scoring for Lincoln Memorial.

The Railsplitters will be back in action on Wednesday for their final road trip of the season, traveling to Emory & Henry to take on the Wasps.
