Baseball takes two of three on road at Limestone

Gaffney, SC - Following a 16-12 win over the Lee University Flames on Wednesday, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back in action on the road in Gaffney, SC for an in-conference match up with the Limestone Saints. The Railsplitters improved to 16-6 overall, with an 8-4 mark in conference play, on the season after taking two of three games in the weekend series. Lincoln Memorial outscored Limestone 32-18 over the three game span.

After taking a decisive 12-0 victory in game one, the Railsplitters got right back to work on offense, tallying 17 runs in game two. It was Lincoln Memorial's third straight game scoring 12 or more runs, outscoring the opposition 45-24 across that span.

Things looked bleak to start game two, as Limestone took a 3-0 lead and all the momentum. The Railsplitters struck back as Collin Goda drove in Austin Epperson, drawing the deficit to 3-1. Chris Hall drove in Tucker Hagan shortly thereafter, bringing the score to 3-2 in the top of the second. It was the first hit of the game for Hall, who tied an LMU record for most hits in a game with six hits in the game. After retiring the Lincoln Memorial batters, Limestone extended its lead by one run, tallying a digit in the bottom of the second, to take a 4-2 lead into the third. It was quiet in the third as both defenses proved reliable. Hall drove in Ryan Kurth in the top of the fourth to cut back to within one run, 4-3, but the Saints answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to jump back out to an 8-3 lead. The sticks came alive for the Railsplitters in the fifth inning, with two players blasting homers, tallying five runs to tie the game at 8-8. Sam Mast was the first Lincoln Memorial player to homer in the fifth, connecting on a two-run moonbeam. Not to be outdone, teammate Kasten Harvey then connected on a three run Apollo-esque blast to left center, tying the game at 8-8. Limestone continued to answer Lincoln Memorial's offensive output with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 11-8 lead. The sixth inning was quiet, almost as if a calm before a storm. The Railsplitters tallied nine runs across the seventh and eighth inning, while holding the home standing Saints to zilch, taking a commanding 17-11 lead. Carson Boles drove in Hall on a double, Epperson connected on a sac-fly to bring Harvey home, Hagan delivered a sac-fly to drive in Boles, Harvey drove in Goda on a single, and Cameron Bowen delivered a grand slam that would have made NASA jealous, bringing home Boles, Harvey, and Hall. Kurth connected on a double to bring Epperson home for Lincoln Memorial's final run of the game. In a final attempt at a comeback, Limestone added one more run in the final inning, bringing the score to its final, 17-12.

The Railsplitters seemed to run out of offensive steam in the final game of the series, falling 6-3. Epperson drove in Boles, and Hagan brought Epperson and Bowen, tallying all three of Lincoln Memorial's runs. The Railsplitters began to heat up near the end of the game, but with only seven innings played in the third and final game, it was just a little too late in the game.
