Softball splits double header with Tusculum

Harrogate, TN - Just under a week after splitting a double header with the UVA-Wise Lady Cavs, the Lincoln Memorial softball team was back in action on Wednesday, playing host to the visiting Tusculum Lady Pioneers. The Lady Splitters entered the contest with a 14-12 record, including a 1-1 mark in conference play.

The Lady Pioneers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in game one, thanks to a home run. However, the Lady Splitters answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Katie Tuggle connected on a double driving in Anna Kate Reichter and Reese Vivrette. Moments later, Katy Pozzuto scored on an error from third base. After a quiet second inning, Tusculum reignited its offense with a three run homer, regaining the lead 4-3. Not to be outdone, in the bottom of the fifth, Pozzuto connected on a solo shot moon blast to tie the game at 4-4. After retiring the Lady Pioneers' offense, the Lady Splitters regained the lead as Reichter drove in Gracie Palmer to take a 5-4 lead. A big seventh inning saw Tusculum regain a 7-5 lead after adding three runs. It would be the nail in the coffin for game one. Tuggle connected on a solo shot homer in the final frame, Lincoln Memorial's second of the game, drawing the score to its final, 7-6.

Victoria Conley pitched all seven innings for Lincoln Memorial, allowing 10 hits, seven runs and five earned runs, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Having fallen in game one, Lincoln Memorial had one goal in mind for game two. Win. Things looked bleak to start, but a big fifth inning would life the Lady Splitters past the Lady Pioneers. The game was quiet through the first two innings before Tusculum added a run in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. It was the final run until the fifth inning, as the Lady Pioneers started the inning by extending their lead to 2-0. However, the Lady Splitters responded emphatically in the bottom of the fifth, tallying seven runs. Sterre den Duijn doubled, driving in Vivrette. Pozzuto then doubled, driving in Den Duijn and Reichter. Conley was walked with the bases loaded, allowing Pozzuto to cross the plate. Palmer was hit by a pitch, allowing Madison Henry to come home. Vivrette was then walked, allowing Jordann Reagan to score. Reichter then singled, bringing home Conley, seeing Lincoln Memorial take a 7-2 lead. Tusculum added one final run in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Splitters captured the 7-3 victory.

Margot van Eijl pitched all seven innings for the Lady Splitters in game two, allowing six hits, three runs, and two earned runs with two walks and nine strikeouts.
