Softball Splits With Carson-Newman

Harrogate, TN- LMU Softball split the doubleheader with Carson-Newman on Wednesday, dropping the first 1-8 while taking the second in exciting fashion 6-5.

The first contest would be Carson-Newman proving themselves as a top conference contender. The bats would be hot, scoring six runs in the first two innings. After a couple of pitching changes, LMU would slow down the momentum. The offense just couldn't get going though, for the Railsplitters, leaving several stranded on base in the first part of the game. Carson-Newman would score two more in the top of the sixth, forcing the Railsplitters to score to extend the game. Reese Vivrette would hit a triple and be scored by a sacrifice fly from Anna Kate Reichter in the bottom half of the inning to do just that. Emma Frost and the Eagles defense would keep the edge, though, leaving the final score at 1-8.

Carson-Newman would entrust Frost with the second game start, after throwing the complete game one. LMU would have an answer this time, finally getting clean contact to turn the offense on. A lead-off home run by the Lady Eagles would give them the quick lead in the first. A double by Vivrette would be followed by a Katy Pozzuto homer to give LMU their first lead of the day. A two run homer for CN would follow in the next inning, allowing them to take back the edge. The bottom half of the inning would feature Nicole Couvertiere and her first home run blast of the season off the scoreboard to tie the game up. The third inning would come with yet another Carson-Newman home run, giving them the lead back once again. Once the home run derby ended, LMU would find themselves back with runners on the bases in the bottom of the fifth with a Reichter single, followed by a Sterre den Duijn walk. Katie Tuggle would hit a sacrifice fly to score Reichter. Henry would step up to get a hit up the middle to score den Duijn. Jordann Reagan would follow with a double off the wall to score Henry and put the Lady Splitters up 6-5. In the midst of that inning would Frost finally exit the game, throwing over 200 pitches on the day. Margot van Eijl, who got the start in the first game, had now been on the mound and would remain solid to keep the Eagle rally quiet and earn the win in the contest.

LMU moves to 20-16 (7-5) on the season, and will be back in action on Saturday, March 30th to take on Coker at home for another 1 PM/3 PM doubleheader at Dorothy Neely Field.
