Harrogate, TN - After sweeping Emory & Henry over the weekend, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back at home playing host to the Kentucky State University Thoroughbreds for the second time this season, seeking to extend its winning streak to four straight. When the teams met in late February, the Railsplitters took a narrow 5-4 decision.Â
Wednesday's game had a much different feel than the first meeting between the two earlier this season. Whereas the Railsplitters escaped with victory in the first meeting, Wednesday's game favored Lincoln Memorial from the beginning until the end.
After holding the Thoroughbreds scoreless in the first inning, the Railsplitters tallied their first run by way of error, seeing
Collin Goda cross the plate for the first run of the game. Again, the Lincoln Memorial defense held Kentucky State off the board in the top of the second inning. After assuming offensive control,
Ryan Kurth gave the Railsplitters their second run of the game, blasting a no-doubter over the wall on a solo shot, giving Lincoln Memorial a 2-0 advantage. The Railsplitters weren't finished yet.
Tyler Boyd connected on a double and was able to reach third on an error from the Thoroughbreds, seeing
Luke Dymond cross the plate. Boyd was subsequently driven home when Goda delivered a sac-fly, further extending the Railsplitters' lead to 4-0. Further into the inning,
Carson Boles tallied his first RBI of the game, driving in
Kasten Harvey with a single up the gut, giving Lincoln Memorial a 5-0 lead.
Kentucky State was able to add a run in the top of the fourth following a quiet third inning from both teams, cutting the deficit to 5-1. However, Boles responded with an in-the-park grand slam in the bottom of the fourth, driving in Harvey, Goda, and Boyd, further extending the Railsplitters' lead to 9-1. Lincoln Memorial once again held Kentucky State off the board in the fifth inning when
Dylan Hogan drove in
Austin Epperson with a single, seeing the Railsplitters crest double digits on the scoreboard, 10-1. The sixth inning was an offensive explosion as the teams combined for seven runs. The Thoroughbreds began to heat up, adding four runs in the top of the sixth to cut the score to 10-5, however, the offensive flame began to smolder and the Thoroughbreds would fail to add another run throughout the remainder of the game. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Lincoln Memorial responded to the sudden burst of offense from Kentucky State.
Alex Kowalski singled to drive in
Mitch Petzelt. With the bases loaded, Goda was hit-by-pitch, seeing Kowalski cross the plate. The following at-bat,
Thailand Love added a run on a wild pitch, scoring the third of the inning for the Railsplitters as they jumped out to a 13-5 lead. The score would rest there until the bottom of the eighth, when for the second time of the game, Goda was walked with bases loaded allowing a Lincoln Memorial run as Love crossed the bag for the second time, tallying the final Railsplitter run of the game, 14-5.
Carter White got the start from the bump, going 4.0 innings with one hit, one run, and zero earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts. The Lincoln Memorial pitching room got plenty of work in with five more pitchers taking the hill.
Payton Armour,
Devin Christopher,
Aiden Carter,
Colin Murphy, and
Ford Hallock all saw time in relief.
With the victory, Lincoln Memorial improved to 23-13 on the season ahead of a weekend series with rival Carson-Newman, beginning on Friday.
