ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference has announced its 2024 Men's Tennis Award Winners and All-Conference Teams earlier today.
The pairing of Thom Hermans and Harper Mills earned them a well-deserved spot on the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Second Team Doubles.
Hermans and Mills boasted an impressive 14-6 record, showcasing their competitiveness on the court with a commendable 70% winning percentage. Their journey to the all-conference team was marked by a remarkable seven-game winning streak, stretching from a decisive victory against the University of North Georgia on Feb 27th to a triumph over Wingate University on March 17th.
During this dominant stretch, Hermans and Mills displayed their skill against formidable opponents, securing crucial victories that propelled them to recognition within the SAC. Notable among their triumphs were victories against Gabriel Constantino and Edis Nokic from Wingate, the pair clinched a hard-fought 6-4 win. Additionally, their victory against Lars Hordijk and Marnix Van Dalen from Carson-Newman further solidified their reputation as a formidable double pairing.
Playing in the second position until March 25th, Hermans and Mills consistently delivered stellar performances, anchoring Lincoln Memorial's doubles lineup and moved into the first position. Their ability to complement each other's strengths and navigate the intricacies of doubles play contributed significantly to the team's success throughout the season.
Alexandru Giurea, the sophomore, had an exceptional season in the #1 singles position. He has made waves in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) and beyond. With an impressive 17-7 record and a remarkable 71% winning percentage, he has been named second team all-conference in singles play.
From a decisive victory against Young Harris College on Feb 5th to a commanding performance against Georgia College and State on Feb 26th, Giurea established a six-game winning streak.
A defining moment in Giurea's season came on March 17th when he faced off against Gabriel Constantino of Wingate University. Giurea emerged victorious in a gripping tiebreaker third set, triumphing with a scoreline of 6-4, 1-6, 10-5. Giurea's match agaiunst Louca Bertone from Limestone College was another remarkable moment for the sophomore. After dropping the first set, Giurea staged a remarkable comeback and won in the first position.
Freshman, Radu Florea made some noise in his first year of being a Railsplitter. With a 16-7 singles record, Florea earned a spot on the Third Team Singles. Radu Florea played in the 2nd and 3rd position on his debut year.
