Wingate, NC- LMU Softball fell to Wingate on the road today, April 20th, in their doubleheader by scores of 1-2 and 3-11.
The first game would be a tight one, LMU's defense would back up
Margot van Eijl on the mound to hold an explosive Wingate team scoreless until the sixth inning. Despite a quiet first few innings, Lincoln Memorial would strike first,
Nicole Couvertiere hitting an RBI single in the top of the fourth to score
Madison Henry for a 1-0 lead. Two runs in the bottom of the sixth would give the Bulldogs back the lead 2-1, leaving LMU to their last three outs to try and extend the game. The team would load the bases but be unable to cash in, ending the first game in tough fashion.
Wingate would put the pressure on in the second game, forcing LMU to try and keep up with their 13 hits on the day. After a quick 1-0 lead,
Katy Pozzuto would answer in the top of the second with a solo homerun to tie the game. Eight combined runs by the Bulldogs in the ensuing innings would force the team into an uphill battle to extend the game. Pozzuto would be the one to strike again for the Railsplitters, doubling to score
Sterre den Duijn and finally crossing the plate herself as
Katie Tuggle reached on an error. It wouldn't be enough to make the runs up, however, ending the game after six innings.
Lincoln Memorial moves to 24-24 (11-13) and returns for their last action of the regular season at Kentucky State on Tuesday, April 23rd, for a 1 PM/3 PM doubleheader.
