Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | John Dunn

Women's lacrosse's comeback attempt falls just short at UVA-Wise

Wise, VA - One week after falling on the road to #15 Wingate and seeing its three game winning streak snapped, the Lincoln Memorial women's lacrosse team took the road for a conference match up with the UVA-Wise Cavaliers on Saturday, seeking to start a new streak. UVA-Wise ended up taking a four goal lead midway through the game, but Lincoln Memorial fought back, taking the game down to the wire.

UVA-Wise struck first, scoring the game's first two goals to take a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Lincoln Memorial responded with a goal from Josie Tinnerello, assisted by Chandler Bell, cutting the deficit back to a single goal, 2-1. Following another goal that saw the Cavaliers take a 3-1 lead, Amber Kirkpatrick netted her first goal of the game in the dwindling moments of the first quarter, cutting the score back to 3-2 in favor of UVA-Wise. The home standing Cavaliers struck first in the second quarter, extending their lead to 4-2. However, the Railsplitters responded with back-to-back goals from Amber Kirkpatrick to knot the game at 4-4. Kirkpatrick tallied her hat trick with the pair of goals. UVA-Wise rattled off the next two goals to regain a 6-4 advantage. Bell answered with a goal, assisted by Haleigh Barnett, cutting the score back to 6-5. After seeing the Cavaliers regain a two goal advantage, 7-5, Tinnerello netted her second goal of the game, assisted by Barnett, cutting the score, once again, back to a one goal deficit. UVA-Wise added one more goal in the first half to take an 8-6 advantage into the halftime intermission.

Lincoln Memorial was the first to strike in the second half as Bell tallied her second goal of the game and Barnett tallied her third assist of the game, bringing the score to 8-7. UVA-Wise responded with three unanswered goals to give itself some cushion on the scoreboard, 11-7. Bell answered the run with her third goal of the game, tallying the hat trick. The Cavaliers added another goal to jump out to a 12-8 lead. However, the Railsplitters refused to lay over and came storming back fervently with four unanswered goals to tie the game at 12-12 heading into the final frame. Ana Carney added her first goal of the game, assisted by Jaiden Jaynes, in the final moments of the third quarter. To start the fourth quarter, the Railsplitters' offense was relentless. Tinnerello recorded her hat trick in the first 30-seconds of the fourth quarter. Liza Buckner then got in on the scoring action, netting her first goal just moments later, cutting the UVA-Wise lead back to one goal, 12-11. Tinnerello added her fourth goal of the game with 12:34 remaining in the contest, assisted by Barnett; her fourth of the game. The Cavaliers added another goal to take a 13-12 lead, but Tinnerello wasn't done. She scored her fifth goal of the game with 7:14 remaining to tie the game at 13-13. The Cavaliers took the lead with 2:16 left in the game, 14-13. It would be the final goal of the game, seeing UVA-Wise escape a fervent comeback effort from Lincoln Memorial.
