6th-ranked Lincoln Memorial falls to Wingate on the road in hard-fought contest

Wingate, NC - Three days after defending its home court against the Emory & Henry Wasps, the 6th-ranked Lincoln Memorial men's basketball team was back on the road in Wingate, NC seeking a regular season sweep of the Wingate Bulldogs. Earlier this season, the Railsplitters defeated the Bulldogs 85-78 in Harrogate. Lincoln Memorial entered the game atop the South Atlantic Conference standings with an overall record of 14-2, including a 12-1 mark in conference play.

Wingate started the game with a three pointer to take an early lead. Lincoln Memorial responded with a 7-0 run to take a 7-3 lead with 17:31 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs answered back with an 8-2 run of their own to regain the lead, 11-9. Another 7-0 run from the Railsplitters saw the lead shift as the score swelled to 18-11. Lincoln Memorial outscored Wingate 6-4 over the next few minutes to take its largest lead of the first half at 24-15. The teams matched each other bucket-for-bucket for the next five minutes, seeing the Railsplitters maintain their lead at 34-25 with 3:27 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs closed the first half on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 34-31 at the half. Lincoln Memorial connected on 48.1% of its shots from the floor in the first half and out rebounded Wingate 18-16. The Railsplitters limited the Bulldogs top scorer, Kendall Taylor, the leading scorer in the conference, to just two points in the first half.

The Railsplitters opened the second half with an 11-6 run to take a 45-37 lead with 15 minutes left in the game. Both defenses locked down the opposing offense for the next two and a half minutes of game time, leaving Lincoln Memorial in control, 48-39 with less than 12 minutes remaining. The Railsplitters' lead grew to 54-44 as the clock crept below 10 minutes remaining in the game. Lincoln Memorial continued to grow its lead, jumping out to a 60-47 advantage with 7:39 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs started chipping away, cutting the lead to 10 points at 64-54 with just 6:44 remaining in the game. However, the Railsplitters answered with back-to-back lay ups from Connor Jordan and Elyjah Freeman to extend the lead to 68-54. Wingate erased the Lincoln Memorial lead in the waning minutes of the game. On the heels of an 17-2 run, the Bulldogs regained the lead, 72-70 with less than a minute left in the game. Wingate closed the game on a 5-2 run to claim victory at home, 77-72.

The Railsplitters shot 51% from the floor. It was the sixth game in a row Lincoln Memorial shot 50% or better from the field. It is also the 17th game of the year (all of them) that the Railsplitters have held their opponent to less than its average points per game of the season. Lincoln Memorial's defense held the conference's leading scorer (K. Taylor, 21.9 PPG) to just 14 points. 

Lincoln Memorial was led in scoring by Wes Enis with 19 points and four rebounds. He was followed by Elyjah Freeman, who tallied his eighth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. EJ Smith added 12 points and three rebounds. Osmar Garcia-Araujo added 11 points, three assists, and three rebounds. Jordan Walters chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds. Connor Jordan added seven points and two rebounds to round out scoring for the Railsplitters.

Lincoln Memorial moves to 14-3 on the season with a 12-2 mark in conference play.
