Railsplitters Defeat Ranked Harvard

Cambridge, MA – The Lincoln Memorial men's volleyball team defeat #19 Harvard Crimson 3-2 Friday evening, marking their first victory over a ranked team this season and their sixth straight win.

The first set was a battle between the two teams, and Harvard had the lead most of the set, but a 7-1 run at the end of the set gave Lincoln Memorial set one, 25-21. The Railsplitters were in the lead until point 15 in the second set, then it was back-and-forth as there were 6 ties in the later half of the set. A Griffin Wheatley kill and 2 attack errors from Harvard gave Lincoln Memorial the win for set two, 25-21. In set three, 16-21 was Harvard's biggest lead, and Lincoln Memorial fought back to decrease their lead, but the Crimson won set three 23-25. With Harvard's best hitting percentage of the night, 0.379, the Crimson take the fourth set to bring the match to set five. Lincoln Memorial dominated the fifth set, only allowing Harvard to put up 6 points, and the Railsplitters taking the fifth set 15-6 and giving Lincoln Memorial the win 3-2.

Four players had double-digit kills on the night: Axel van Baars leading the category with 15 kills, Matthew Gentry with 13 kills, Griffin Wheatley with 12 kills, and Eliel Salva Torres with 10 kills. Salva Torres had the highest hitting percentage with 0.500. John Luers was the game-leader in assists with 48, a season-high.   Tate Colebaugh led the night in digs with 16, with Luers also tallying double-digits with 10.  Gentry, Salva Torres, and Luers all led in total blocks with 6, with Gentry and Salva Torres recording 6 block assists and Luers registering 1 solo block and 4 block assists.

As a team, Lincoln Memorial tallied 57 kills, a 0.239 attack percentage, 54 assists, 48 digs, and 13 total blocks.

This is the first time in series history that the Railsplitters have defeated Harvard.

With the win, the Railsplitters improve to 6-0 on the season.

They will have a quick turnaround for their next match, which is in less than 24 hours. They will face Saint Francis tomorrow, February 1st, at 4 pm.
