Harrogate, TN -The Lincoln Memorial women's soccer team gets a Senior Night shutout over the Mars Hill Lions Saturday evening 5-0. Seniors
Ellie Snyder,
Jade Brown,
Maiara Windszus Pessanha,
Gabby Barnes, Revan Wellington,
Ally Bevins, and
Hannah Stafford were all honored after their match in the men's halftime for their contributions for to the women's soccer program.
The Railsplitters begun the match on a positive note as their first shot on frame resulted in a goal for LMU in the 8th minute:
Ellie Snyder crosses the ball into the 6-yard box right in front of
Edie Wilds, who slots the ball to the bottom left corner of the goal out of the Lion's goalkeeper's reach to take the lead 1-0.
LMU continued to remain strong offensively and defensively as they kept Mars Hill from taking any shots but were producing scoring chances of their own. Snyder fired off a shot in the 16th minute on goal, which was saved.
Lieve Schiphof followed with a shot in the 23rd minute, also saved.
Senior Night was a special one for senior
Maiara Windszus Pessanha, as she scored her first career goal in the 25th minute.
Ellie Snyder passed the ball to Windszus Pessanha at the top of the 18-yard box, and she turned and fired off a rocket to the top left corner of the goal to extend LMU's lead 2-0.
The Lions still had not taken a shot on frame, but the Railsplitters remained on their attacking end as
Donna van der Zalm took a shot in the 37th minute, saved, followed by a
Viktoria Filsner shot, also saved.
The score going into halftime was 2-0 with the Lincoln Memorial advantage.
Much like the first half, the Railsplitters began the second half with intensity with a goal just six minutes into the half. In the 51st minute, Snyder passed the ball from the corner of the 18-yard box to a running
Astrid Palmblad, who dribbled the ball past the Lion defenders to the corner of the 6-yard box and slid the ball past the goalkeeper's head to add another goal to the scoreboard 3-0.
Mars Hill's first shot on goal came in the 55th minute, giving goalkeeper
Emma Cooke her first save of the night.
Along with her first career goal, Windszus Pessanha tallied her first brace of her career in the 71st minute, when
Ava Garrett crosses the ball from the left of the 18-yard box into the Mars Hill goalkeeper's hands, but drops it right in front of Windszus Pessanha to give her an easy shot into the back of the net to make the Railsplitter lead 4-0.
Wilds continued to push into their attacking third with a shot on target in the 88th minute, which was saved.
With just one second left in the match,
Jade Brown passed the ball to
Riley Miller off of a free kick, who launches the ball into the 18-yard box to a Mars Hill defender who lands the ball in the back of their defending goal to give LMU another goal on the board 5-0.
The final score would be 5-0 with Lincoln Memorial getting the win.
Windszus Pessanha would lead the team on the evening in goals with two, followed by Wilds and Palmblad with one. Snyder tallied three assists, and Garrett recorded one. Wilds led the team in shots with four, and Wilds and Windszus Pessanha were the team leaders in shots on goal with two each.
Emma Cooke did not see much action on the defending end as she only recorded one save.
As a team, the Railsplitters recorded 18 shots, with nine being on goal, one save, and six corner kicks.
With the win, LMU improves to 6-4-3 overall and 2-3-2 in conference play, and Mars Hill drops to 1-10 overall and 0-8 in conference play.
Lincoln Memorial's next match will be on Wednesday, October 22nd as they host another SAC opponent, Newberry College, at 2:30 pm at LMU Lacrosse Complex.
