Harrogate, TN – Lincoln Memorial women's basketball took an overtime win against Wingate Saturday afternoon 69-65.
Lincoln Memorial came out with pressure in the first, with LMU forcing the Bulldogs to make six turnovers while the Lady Railsplitters only made one. With Alexa Simiddy leading the quarter with six points, LMU goes into the second with the 16-13 lead.
The second quarter was even, as both teams only scored 14 points each, with LMU going 43% from beyond the arch. Smiddy also led this quarter with five points, and the team went into halftime with the 30-27 advantage.
The Bulldogs picked up the momentum in the third, outscoring the Lady Railsplitters 12-18. LMU hit crucial free throws with making 4/6, but Wingate still took the lead going into the fourth quarter 42-45.
LMU responded back in the fourth by coming out on top in scoring 13-10, led by Smiddy with four. As both teams battled, the game went into overtime as the end of regulation ended with a 55-55 score.
Free throws were once again a key role in Lincoln Memorial's success in the overtime period, as they made 11/12 free throws, led by Smiddy who made 7/8. As the Lady Railsplitters denied Wingate of all rebounding chances as they out rebounded the Bulldogs 5-0, LMU took home the victory 69-65.
Smiddy led all scorers with 22 points, followed by
Kamil Collier with 12 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double double of the season.
Keiara Anderson and
Asia Barr also tallied double-digits in scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Ajalon Gillard followed with seven points, along with
Lexi Patty who recorded five points, team-high six assists, and six rebounds.
Maleiya Hill rounded out the scoring with two points.
As a team, Lincoln Memorial went 27.3% from the field, 32.4% from the three, and 21/26 from the free throw line.
LMU tallied 31 rebounds, 14 second chance points, 12 points in the paint, 11 fast break points, 16 points off of Wingate turnovers, and 9 points from the bench.
With the win, the Lady Railsplitters improve to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in conference, while Wingate drops to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the SAC.
LMU will have one more game before the holiday break, as they host Emory & Henry on Wednesday, December 17
th at 5:30 pm in Tex Turner Arena.
