Men's Lacrosse Defeats Trojans On The Road

Mount Olive, NC – The Lincoln Memorial men's lacrosse team defeats the Trojans of Mount Olive 11-8 for their second win of the season to begin a 2-game winning streak.

The Trojans begin the scoring two minutes into the match, with Lewis scoring unassisted with 12:576 left in the first quarter. The Railsplitters respond with 2 goals to gain the lead: Daniel Pearl adding a goal with 10:01 remaining, unassisted; and Brock Saunders recording his first goal of the match with 8:26 remaining to give LMU the leda 2-1. Mount Olive regains back the lead less than two minutes later with a pair of goals by Karasek with 7:22 left in the first and Stavrianakis (Vanderkley) scoring the second with 6:24 remaining. Lincoln Memorial ties up the match with less than a minute left in the first quarter, with Alex Wegrzyn registering his first goal of the match, assisted by Rhodes Conroy with 0:24 left in the first quarter. The score at the end of the first quarter is 3-3.

Mount Olive scores their first and only goal of the second quarter with 11:09 remaining, scored by Stavrianakis. LMU regains and extends their led all within the last 5 minutes of the second quarter, starting with Wegrzyn scoring his second goal of the match with 4:57 remaining. Not even a minute later, Saunders adds his second goal of the match with 4:16 left in the second, with Conroy recording his second assist. 45 seconds later, John Lombel adds the last goal of the quarter with 3:30 remaining, unassisted. The goal going into halftime was 6-4 with Lincoln Memorial in the lead.

The Railsplitters keeps the momentum going in the second half by scoring the first goal of the third quarter, with Koen Burdette getting his first career goal with 12:33 remaining, to make the score 7-4. The Trojans add two more goals to lessen LMU's lead: Karasek (Boyle) with 8:05 remaining and Vanderkley (Lewis) with 4:49 remaining. Lincoln Memorial extends the lead back to a 2 goal lead with 2:20 remaining when Alex Winters adds his first goal of the match, with Jenson Jones earning the assist. The score at the end of the third quarter was 8-6 with the Railsplitters in the lead.

Mount Olive scores a man-up goal to start out the fourth quarter, with Vanderkley (Rieger) scoring with 14:07 remaining. Lincoln Memorial adds 3 goals in the last 10 minutes to secure the win: Jones adding a goal with 7:40 remaining, Pearl scoring with 4:00 remaining by a Jones assist, Gavin Reid recording his first goal of the match with 2:11 remaining, with Pearl recording the assist. The Trojans add their last goal with 1:13 remaining, with Karasek (Vanderkley) scoring. Despite the last minute efforts from Mount Olive, the Railsplitters gained enough of a lead to secure their second win of the season 11-8.

Pearl was the team-leader in points with 3, which includes 2 goals and 1 assist. Wegrzyn and Saunders also both score two goals. Reid, Winters, Burdette, and Jones all add 1 goal each, with Jones also recording 2 assists. Haden Berry and Lombel led in ground balls with 4, and Berry won 7/16 face offs. Tyler Wilcenski and Lombel both led in caused turnovers with 2. Connor Fitzgibbon also recorded 11 saves in the match.

As a team, LMU recorded 11 goals, 6 assists, 28 shots, with 20 of those being on goal, 27 ground balls, 25/26 successful clears, and 8 caused turnovers.

With the win, the Railsplitters improve to 2-1 on the season.

For their next match, they will travel to Savannah, GA to face Saint Leo University on February 22nd at 1 pm.
