6th-ranked men's basketball falls to UVA-Wise in Virginia

Wise, VA – Five days after a nearly 30-point drubbing of then-16th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne, the 6th-ranked Lincoln Memorial men's basketball team was in action in Wise, VA against the Cavaliers. The Railsplitters defeated the Cavaliers 79-69 earlier in the season and were seeking the regular season sweep. Lincoln Memorial entered the game with a 20-3 record, including a conference leading 18-2 record in conference play. UVA-Wise entered the contest with a 15-9 overall record, including a 12-8 mark in conference play.

The Cavaliers tallied the game's first bucket before the Railsplitters regained control from beyond the arc, 3-2. Trailing UVA-Wise 6-5, Lincoln Memorial executed a 9-2 run to gain a 14-8 advantage. UVA-Wise responded with an 11-0 run to take its largest lead of the game to that point, 19-14 with just over nine minutes remaining. The Railsplitters stopped the scoring drought with layup from Osmar Garcia-Araujo, setting the score at 19-16. The Cavaliers' lead grew to 22-16 before the Railsplitters knotted the score at 22-22 with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half.

The teams continued to match one another bucket-for-bucket, seeing the score grow to 28-28 with three minutes left in the first half. UVA-Wise went on a 5-0 run to take a 33-28 lead with just over one minute left in the half. The Railsplitters added one more bucket before the half, leaving the score at 33-30 in favor of the Cavaliers at the midway point of the game.
The lead changed hands six times in the first half. Both teams shot 39% from the floor in the first, but the glaring difference was the three point percentage. UVA-Wise shot 50% from long range in the first half but maintained only a three-point advantage at the midway point. Lincoln Memorial did most of its damage on the inside, dominating points in the paint 24-10. The Railsplitters played very clean in the front end of the game, only turning the ball over one time and committing only three fouls.

UVA-Wise started the second half fast, rushing out to a 10-point lead in the first five minutes, taking a 46-36 advantage on the heels of a 13-6 run to start the back half of the game. Lincoln Memorial clawed back to within four points, 47-43, but the Cavaliers extended their lead to 12 points, 59-47, with nine and a half minutes remaining in the game. The score swelled to 66-53 as UVA-Wise extended its lead to 13 with 5:45 left in the game. The Railsplitters cut back to within single digits with just over a minute left in the game, trailing 73-64. However, the Railsplitters failed to complete the comeback, falling by a final score of 78-67.

Wes Enis led Lincoln Memorial in scoring with 19 points. He was followed by Thomas Allard, who posted his first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Elyjah Freeman chipped in 10 points, Connor Jordan and Jordan Walters added eight points each. EJ Smith scored five points, Osmar Garcia-Araujo added four points, and Mahmoud Bangura "Mo" added two points to round out scoring for the Railsplitters.

Lincoln Memorial will have to shake the loss off quickly before traveling to Coker on Saturday.
