Women's Basketball Comes Out Victorious In Battle Against UVA Wise

Wise, VA – The Lincoln Memorial Lady Railsplitters come out victorious in the close battle against the UVA Wise Cavaliers Thursday evening for their 10th conference win of the season and the beginning of a win streak. 

LMU struggled offensively in the first quarter, as the Lady Railsplitters only scored 10 points while the Cavaliers posted 21. In the second, Lincoln Memorial picked up their momentum as they outscore UVA Wise 18-13, with Alexa Smiddy scoring 13 points and going 3/5 from behind the arch. Despite the offensive improvement from LMU, the Cavaliers went into halftime with the lead 34-28. In the first half, LMU went 35.7% from the field, 36.4% from the three, and 66.7% from the charity stripe. Also in the opening half, the Lady Railsplitters forced the Cavs to 12 turnovers compared to their 7. 

Lincoln Memorial was able to catch up and battle in the third, as the score was tied 4 times throughout the quarter. UVA Wise had the lead going into the fourth quarter 42-45, despite outscoring the Cavaliers 14-11. The fourth was another battle, as there were 3 lead changes and 2 ties, but the Lady Railsplitters limited UVA Wise to only score 8 points compared to LMU's 13, which gave them the 2-point win 55-53. 

Three players scored double-figures in the game and had the majority of LMU's points: Alexa Smiddy with game-high 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists; Kamil Collier with nearly a double-double with 13 points and 8 rebounds, and Lexi Patty with 13 points and 3 rebounds. Matty Tanner recorded 6 points, Asia Barr with 3 points, Caroline Sikkink with 2, with each of them recording 3 rebounds each. Federica Lagana finished out the scoring with 1 point and 6 rebounds. 

As a team, Lincoln Memorial went 37% from the field, 33.3% from behind the arch, and 75% from the free-throw line. They scored 22 points in the paint, 11 second chance points, 2 fast-break points, and 13 points off of Cavalier turnovers. The Lady Railsplitters out rebounded UVA Wise 33-30, posted 2 blocks, 8 steals, and 10 assists. 

With the win, Lincoln Memorial imoroves to 11-13 overall and 10-11 in conference play. 

Because of the weather forcing the game to be postponed one day, the Lady Railsplitters have a quick turnaround as they will travel straight from Wise, VA to Hartsville, SC to face Coker on Saturday, February 22ndwith tip-off slated for 2 pm.
