Baseball's comeback effort falls short in the ninth at UVA-Wise

Wise, VA – The Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back in action on Monday, for game three of its first conference road series of the season on the road at UVA-Wise. The Railsplitters split the double-header on Sunday, taking game one by a substantial margin of 14-2 and falling in game two, 5-3. Sunday's game would decide the series.

Game three had a slower start than Sunday's first game. Lincoln Memorial tallied its first hit of the game in the top of the first inning when Alex Kowalski doubled to left center. However, the Railsplitters were unable to capitalize, stranding Kowalski at second. The Cavaliers went down in succession as Colin Muphy forced a ground-out, fly-out, and ground-out to retire the side quickly.

Lincoln Memorial added another hit to the board in the second inning when Archer Wong-Shasteen singled to right, however, the Railsplitters were once again unable to capitalize, stranding Wong-Shasteen on first. UVA-Wise scored the first run of the game on a home run in the bottom of the second, taking a 1-0 lead.

Kowalski managed his second hit of the game in the third inning, singling to left field, but was left on base. The Cavaliers extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning on a two RBI double. Lincoln Memorial began to chip away, scoring its first run of the game in the fourth inning when Wong-Shasteen grounded-out to third base, driving home Joey LaMattina. The Railsplitters defense held the Cavaliers off the board, cutting the margin to two runs, 3-1.

Lincoln Memorial inched closer in the top of the fifth. Brooks Hagedorn connected on a single to lead off the fifth inning and subsequently stole second base. Following a ground-out from Kowalski, Hagedorn found himself on third base. Sam Mast delivered a single to center field to drive in Hagedorn and cut the deficit to one run, 3-2. After once again holding UVA-Wise off the scoreboard, the margin remained at one run heading into the sixth inning.

With a new pitcher on the mound, trailing by one, Lincoln Memorial found itself with a runner on base after CJ Dugan was walked, he then stole second base, but it wouldn't even matter. On the ensuing at-bat, Austin Epperson jacked a two-shot homer to give the Railsplitters their first lead of the game, 4-3. UVA-Wise was unable to add anything to the run total as Murphy retired his 10th consecutive batter to work the game into the seventh inning. Both teams posted goose eggs in the seventh inning, leaving Lincoln Memorial in control, 4-3, heading into the eighth.

Lincoln Memorial was unable to add to the run total in the eighth inning. UVA-Wise poured on five runs in the bottom of the inning to regain an 8-4 advantage. The Railsplitters came storming back in the top of the ninth. Wong-Shasteen singled to get a runner on base. Hall was hit by pitch on the ensuing at-bat, leaving two runners on base. A wild pitch saw both Wong-Shasteen and Hall advance to third and second respectively. Hagedorn was walked, seeing Hall advance to third and Wong-Shasteen score on a wild pitch. Kasten Harvey connected on a single to shortstop, driving in Hall, cutting the lead to 8-6. The Railsplitters scored another run when Joey LaMattina delivered a sac-fly to drive home Hagedorn. However, with two down, UVA-Wise was able to close the game on the following at-bat with a groundout to third base, securing the 8-7 victory.
