Harrogate, TN – Just one day after having its fervent comeback effort halted in the ninth inning of game three against UVA-Wise in the first conference road series of the season, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back at home for a midweek match up with the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans. The Railsplitters entered the game with a 7-7 overall record, including a 3-3 mark in conference play. The Trojans entered the game 4-8 overall with a 2-4 mark in conference play.
Trevecca Nazarene got off to a hot start, tallying four runs in the first inning on four hits to take a quick 4-0 lead. Lincoln Memorial managed one hit in the bottom of the inning, but failed to capitalize, leaving one on base, leaving the score at 4-0 heading into the second inning. The game settled down in the second inning as both teams posted goose eggs to leave the score in favor of the Trojans, 4-0, heading into the third inning.
Payton Armour took the mound to start the third inning for the Railsplitters and retired the first three batters of the inning in succession to give Lincoln Memorial a chance to battle back.
Chris Hall got things started with a single.
Brooks Hagedorn followed with a single to put two runners on base for the Railsplitters. On the ensuing at-bat,
Kasten Harvey delivered a single, driving in Hall, advancing Hagedorn to third. With Hagedorn on third,
Austin Epperson and
Joey LaMattina were both walked, loading the bases.
Alex Kowalski then walked, walking in a run to cut the margin to 4-2. On the following at-bat,
Trace Simmons singled to right field, driving in Epperson. Two batters later,
Archer Wong-Shasteen reached first on an error by the Trojans' shortstop, allowing Kowalski and LaMattina to score, giving the Railsplitters a 5-4 lead heading into the fourth inning.
Both teams failed to score in the fourth inning, leaving Lincoln Memorial in control heading into the fifth inning. Trevecca Nazarene came out swinging in the fifth, inevitably loading the bases. However,
Carter White got out of the jam, leaving the Trojans scoreless in the inning. In the bottom of fifth, the Railsplitters extended their lead to 6-4 when Simmons singled to center field to drive in Kowalski. Lincoln Memorial's defense once again held Trevecca off the board in the top of the sixth, maintaining a 6-4 advantage. In the bottom of the sixth, the Railsplitters began to pull away further, adding three runs to take a 9-4 lead when Simmons once again connected on a single to drive in LaMattina and Epperson, and when
Kevin Fernandez delivered an RBI single to drive in Simmons.
Trevecca chipped into the Lincoln Memorial lead in the top of the seventh, adding one run to bring the score to 9-5 as the Railsplitters assumed the batter's box after retiring the side. Lincoln Memorial continued to pour it on the Trojans, adding three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Epperson singled to drive in Hall, Kowalski connected on a sac-fly to drive in Harvey, and Simmons singled to left field to drive in Epperson, giving the Railsplitters a 12-5 advantage heading into the eighth inning. After holding the Trojans off the board once again, the Railsplitters failed to relent, continuing to pour on runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, adding three more runs, enforcing the run rule and securing a 15-5 victory.
