Harrogate, TN – Following a substantial 12-3 victory over Roosevelt in a downpour on Saturday night, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back in action on Sunday for the fourth and final game of the series.
The Lakers were the first on the board, tallying two runs in the top of the first inning on the heels of a pair of runs, taking a 2-0 lead early. However, a huge half inning from the Railsplitters saw Lincoln Memorial take a substantial 9-2 lead after adding nine runs in the bottom half of the first. On the first pitch of his first at-bat,
Kasten Harvey connected on a solo shot to left field to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. Following a single from
Alex Kowalski,
Sam Mast delivered a double to drive in Kowalski, knotting the game at 2-2. Mast then stole third and
Trace Simmons was hit by pitch to leave two base runners for the Railsplitters.
Chris Hall then ripped a three-run shot to left field to give Lincoln Memorial a 5-2 lead. Not to be outdone, on the following at-bat,
CJ Dugan piped a solo shot to left field, the third Railsplitters' home run of the inning, extending the lead to 6-2. Following a triple by
Brooks Hagedorn,
Caleb Jordan delivered a single through the right side to drive in Hagedorn, further extending the lead to 7-2. Jordan stole second before
Austin Epperson tripled to right field to drive in Jordan, giving the Railsplitters an 8-2 advantage. Kowalski connected on his second single of the inning to drive home Epperson, bringing the score to 9-2 at the end of the first inning.
Each team added one run in the second inning and one run in the third inning. The Lakers connected on a homer in the second inning to cut the score to 9-3. However, Dugan took home in the bottom of the second on an error by Roosevelt, maintaining a seven-run advantage, 10-3. The Lakers added another run in the top of the third to cut the score to 10-4, but
Sam Mast took home in the bottom of the third to see the margin remain at seven runs, 11-4 heading into fourth inning. Lincoln Memorial's defense kept Roosevelt off the board in the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Railsplitters added to their run total when Kowalski was walked, seeing Jordan take home on the walk, taking a 12-4 lead. Following another walked run, Simmons connected on a sac-fly to left field to drive in Epperson, extending the lead to run-rule territory at 14-4 in the fourth inning. The Lakers eventually retired the Railsplitters, but the damage was done as Lincoln Memorial took a 14-4 lead into the top of the fifth inning.
A pair of errors in the top of the fifth from Lincoln Memorial saw Roosevelt cut back to within the run-rule, 14-5. An added home run from the Lakers saw the deficit cut to seven runs, following a two-run shot, 14-7. With another RBI single from Harvey and a sac-fly from Kowalski, the Railsplitters added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 16-7 lead. Roosevelt fought back fervently in the top of the sixth inning, adding three runs to cut the deficit to 16-10. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Dugan connected on his second home run of the day, a solo shot to left field, giving the Railsplitters a 17-10 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. Roosevelt added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning, further cutting into the Lincoln Memorial lead, 17-12. The Railsplitters took over on offense in the bottom of the seventh leading 17-12, but failed to add to the run total, taking a five-run advantage into the eighth. The Lakers continued to chip away as the finish line for the game was in sight. In the top of the eighth, Roosevelt added another run to cut the deficit to within a grand slam, 17-13. However, Lincoln Memorial limited the damage to just one run, taking a 17-13 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning. Dugan's hot day continued in the eighth inning as he connected on another hit to drive in Hall, giving the Railsplitters an 18-13 lead heading into the final frame. Needing just three outs to secure the fourth and final game of the series to sweep Roosevelt, the Lakers refused to go down without a fight. Roosevelt added three runs in the final half inning but were unable to tie the game or take the lead, seeing Lincoln Memorial secure an 18-16 victory.
