Baseball falls to Bluefield State on walk-off

Bluefield, WV - Three days after sweeping Roosevelt in a four-game series, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back on the road for the first time in more than two weeks after an eight-game home stand. Following the sweep of Roosevelt, the Railsplitters improved to 16-10 on the season, maintaining a 6-6 mark in conference play. Bluefield State has had a rough season thus far, limping into the game against the Railsplitters with a 2-19 record overall.

Lincoln Memorial struck first in the top of the first inning. Following three consecutive hits from Trace Simmons, Alex Kowalski, and Joey LaMattina, the Railsplitters took a quick 1-0 lead when LaMattina drove in Simmons with a single up the middle. Lincoln Memorial's defense retired Bluefield State's first three batters in succession to take over on offense in the top of the second. The Railsplitters went down one, two, three in the second inning, giving the Big Blue an opportunity to strike back. However, once again, the Lincoln Memorial pitching and defense withstood the test, seeing the score remain 1-0 heading into the third inning. The Railsplitters added to their run total in the top of the third inning behind two hits. Simmons and Kowalski continued to stay hot at the plate. Simmons connected on a single to the pitcher before stealing second base. Kowalski delivered a two-run moon shot to drive in Simmons, extending the Lincoln Memorial lead to 3-0. After retaking the field, the Railsplitters' defense once again held the Big Blue off the board, taking a 3-0 advantage into the fourth inning.

Things continued to trend in Lincoln Memorial's direction in the fourth inning. Brooks Hagedorn was hit-by-pitch before stealing second base. On the following at-bat, Kevin Fernandez made solid contact on a triple to center field to drive in Hagedorn. Kasten Harvey put up a sac-fly to drive in Fernandez to give the Railsplitters two more runs in the inning, extending the lead to 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Bluefield State began to fight back in the bottom of the fourth, adding three runs behind three hits to cut the lead to 5-3 heading into the fifth inning. Simmons and Kowalski again stepped up at the plate, with the tandem connecting on a pair of singles, however, the Railsplitters failed to capitalize, maintaining a 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Big Blue also failed to chip any further into the Lincoln Memorial lead as the game moved into the sixth inning.

The Railsplitters went down in succession in the sixth inning, seeing the Big Blue take over on offense. Bluefield State managed to add a run in the bottom of the sixth on an error by Lincoln Memorial, drawing the game back to within one run, 5-4, heading into the seventh inning. The Railsplitters gave themselves a bit of cushion in the seventh, adding two runs behind one hit. After seeing Harvey hit-by-pitch, Austin Epperson reached on a fielder's choice, leaving two runners on base. Yet again Simmons stepped into the batter's box with intent, connecting on another hit, a double to left field to drive in both Harvey and Epperson, extending the lead to 7-4 before Bluefield State retook the sticks. Another error from the Railsplitters saw the Big Blue add another run in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the score to 7-5. Once again, Lincoln Memorial gave itself some cushion, adding two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 9-5 lead. Archer Wong-Shasteen was walked before Hagedorn delivered a single to the pitcher to give the Railsplitters two runners on base. Each advanced a base by way of stealing.

Fernandez blasted another big shot to the left field wall to drive in Wong-Shasteen and Hagedorn but was thrown out at third after trying to stretch the double into a triple. The game moved into the bottom of the eighth inning with Lincoln Memorial leading 9-5. Bluefield state added two hits and a run to cut the Railsplitters' lead to three runs, 9-6, heading into the final frame. The Big Blue retired the Railsplitters' final three batters in succession to give themselves a chance with only three outs remaining in the game. Bluefield State began to gain momentum late in the game, tallying two hits and four runs in the bottom half of the inning to win the game in walk-off fashion, 10-9.

With the loss, the Railsplitters moved to 16-11 on the season and will be back in action against conference opponent Wingate this weekend on the road, beginning with a double-header on Friday.
