Wingate, NC - Two days after falling to Bluefield State in walk-off fashion, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back in action on Friday for game one of a three-game weekend conference series against the Wingate Bulldogs. The Railsplitters entered the game with a 16-11 overall record, including a 6-6 mark in conference play. The Bulldogs entered the game with a 12-14 overall record, with an 8-7 mark in conference play.
The home standing Bulldogs were the first on the board, scoring in the bottom of the third inning on an error by the Railsplitters. With Lincoln Memorial trailing 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning,
Sam Mast gave the Railsplitters a 3-1 advantage when he ripped a three-run shot to left field, driving in
Austin Epperson and
Alex Kowalski. Wingate stormed back to take a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs in the inning. Lincoln Memorial chipped into the Wingate lead in the top of the seventh inning when
Trace Simmons singled to right field, allowing
Kevin Fernandez to score, cutting the lead to 5-4 late in the game. However, the Railsplitters failed to complete the comeback, falling 5-4, and moved to 16-12 on the season with a 6-7 mark in conference play.
Lincoln Memorial and Wingate will play a double-header on Saturday, with game one beginning at 1 PM and game two to follow at 4 PM.
