Baseball splits double-header with Emory & Henry, wins series 2-1

Harrogate, TN – One day after defeating the Emory & Henry Wasps in game one of the three game weekend series in walk-off fashion, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back in action on Saturday, seeking to sweep Emory & Henry for the second consecutive season.

Jack Santi got the start from the mound for Lincoln Memorial and couldn't have had a much better start. Santi's first pitch was a fly-out to center field, he struck out the second batter, and the third batter flew out to right field, seeing Emory & Henry's first three batters go down in succession to give the Railsplitters their first taste of offense for the day. Lincoln Memorial couldn't have asked for a much better start offensively either. Leading off for the Railsplitters, Kasten Harvey cranked a solo shot home run in his first at-bat to give Lincoln Memorial a quick 1-0 lead. Lincoln Memorial was unable to add to its run total, taking a one-run lead into the second inning.

Once again, Santi and the Railsplitter defense retired the Wasps in succession by fly-out, strikeout, fly-out, the same as the first inning. Leading 1-0, Lincoln Memorial took over on offense seeking to build on its lead. Archer Wong-Shasteen got things started with a single to center field. Brooks Hagedorn then wore a pitch to leave two runners on base. Chris Hall stepped into the box on the following at-bat, blasting a three-run bomb to give the Railsplitters a 4-0 advantage heading into the third inning. Leading 4-0 in the top of the third inning, Emory & Henry chipped into the Lincoln Memorial lead with an RBI double to cut the score to 4-1. The Railsplitters limited the damage to just one run heading into the bottom of the inning. The Wasps held Lincoln Memorial off the board in the bottom of the third, but still trailed 4-1 heading into the top of the fourth inning.

Emory & Henry managed to cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth, adding one run in the inning behind two hits. Lincoln Memorial once again limited the damage to just one run, taking a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Railsplitters received hitting contributions from Hagedorn with a double, and Harvey with a sac-fly, to increase the lead to 5-2 heading into the fifth inning. Dylan Maire toed the rubber to start the fifth inning, relieving Santi. The Wasps began to find success on small ball contact plays, tallying consecutive hits in the fifth inning to score one run, cutting the lead to 5-3 in favor of the home standing Railsplitters heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Lincoln Memorial managed a pair of hits in the bottom of the fifth but was unable to extend its lead beyond 5-3 heading into the top of the sixth inning.

Emory & Henry found itself with two runners on base in the top of the sixth, but were unable to capitalize, seeing the score rest at 5-3 in favor of Lincoln Memorial heading into the bottom of the inning, seeking more separation. The Railsplitters increased their lead to 6-3 when Austin Epperson grounded out to third, seeing Hall take home. Payton Armour took the mound for the Railsplitters to start the seventh inning. Lincoln Memorial made quick work of Emory & Henry in the top of the seventh, taking a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the inning.  The Railsplitters added four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding 10-3 lead. Wong-Shasteen connected on a single through the left side with the bases loaded, but an error by the left fielder allowed the bases to clear and Wong-Shasteen take home, scoring four runs.

Leading 10-3 in the top of the eighth, Lincoln Memorial retiring three straight batters in succession, taking a commanding 10-3 lead into the bottom of the inning. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Railsplitters added five more runs to force the run rule, claiming the series 2-0 with game three remaining.

Colin Murphy got the nod in game three of the series. Much like in game one of the double-header, Lincoln Memorial got off to a good start on defense, retiring three straight batters to take over on offense after holding Emory & Henry scoreless in the top of the first inning. The Wasps responded in kind, retiring the first three Railsplitter batters in succession to move the game into the top of the second inning. The first base runner of the game came by way of a walk in the top of the second inning but was caught stealing. Emory & Henry got another base runner by way of error, but was unable to capitalize, seeing the score remain knotted at 0-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning.

Trace Simmons was the first base runner of the game for the Railsplitters, taking base on balls. Sam Mast connected with a single to left field to leave two runners on base. CJ Dugan delivered a line drive up the gut to drive in Simmons, leaving two base runners and no outs, leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second. Archer Wong-Shasteen crushed a ball to deep right field, turning on the jets to make it to third base in a sliding attempt, driving in Dugan and Mast to extend the Lincoln Memorial lead to 3-0. With no outs and one on base, Brooks Hagedorn delivered a single to drive in Wong-Shasteen. Hagedorn was caught stealing at second for the first out of the inning.  The hot bats continued for the Railsplitters as Chris Hall connected on his second triple of the day, Lincoln Memorial's second of the half inning. As if the Railsplitters couldn't do any better on the sticks, on the ensuing at-bat, Kasten Harvey connected on a triple, giving the Railsplitters three triples in the second inning alone. Harvey's triple drove in Hall to extend the Lincoln Memorial lead to a quick 5-0.

Emory & Henry tallied its first hits of the game in the top of the third inning, adding two hits, but failed to convert any base runners into runs, continuing to trail Lincoln Memorial 5-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning. The Railsplitter bats stayed white hot in the third inning, adding two runs on four hits. Mast drove in Kowalski with a sac-fly and Dugan singled to left field to drive in Simmons to give Lincoln Memorial a 7-0 advantage heading into the fourth inning.  The Wasps found their way onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning with a solo shot home run, cutting the lead to 7-1.  However, that was all that Emory & Henry could muster, leaving Lincoln Memorial firmly in control, 7-1, heading into the bottom of the fourth. The Railsplitters added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Kowalski drove in Hall with a sac-fly, extending the Lincoln Memorial lead to 8-1.

With five hits in the top of the fifth inning, the Wasps added three runs, cutting the Railsplitters lead in half, 8-4. However, with two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning, Lincoln Memorial re-extended its lead to 9-4 when Brooks Hagedorn connected on a double to left field to drive in CJ Dugan. Emory & Henry came storming back in the top of the sixth inning with 10 runs on four hits, taking a 14-9 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Lincoln Memorial was unable to regain control as the game moved into the seventh inning with the Wasps in control 14-9. The Railsplitters held Emory & Henry off the board in the top of the seventh inning with one final chance to come back and win in walk-off fashion. Mast took base after being hit by pitch and LaMattina connected on a double to right center field to advance Mast to third and take second. With two runners on base and one out, Hagedorn connected on a sac-fly to drive in Mast, bringing the score to 14-10. On the ensuing at-bat Hall drove in Jordan to bring the score to 14-11, but the Wasps closed the game with the final out on the following at-bat to split the double-header.
