Wheeling, WV - The Lincoln Memorial men's lacrosse team defeats the Wheeling University Cardinals Saturday afternoon for their 4th overall win of the season.
LMU gets things started in the first quarter a they put together their first scoring run of the match, with the Railsplitters' first goal coming from
Jenson Jones with 10:18 remaining as
Gavin Reid tallies his first assist, followed by
Koen Burdette scoring his first goal of the match with 9:51 remaining, unassisted. The Cardinals would respond by tying up the match as Rowe scored with 2:10 remaining and Worley with 1:28 remaining. LMU would quickly add a goal right off of the face off with
Jacob Scholz recording his first goal. With that being the last goal scored of the quarter, LMU would go into the second quarter in the lead 3-2.
The Railsplitters would be quick to score in the second as Jones secures the brace with his second goal of the match with 14:31 remaining, with
Alex Winters earning his first assist. Not even a minute later,
Aiden Smith would extend LMU's lead with 13:50 remaining as
Rhodes Conroy posts his first assist of the match. Wheeling would score 3 back-to-back goals: Strong with 13:08 remaining, Chase with 12:15 remaining, and Worley with 7:54 remaining. The Railsplitters would put the last goal of the second quarter on the board as Conroy tallies a goal of his own with 6:57 remaining, unassisted. With the last seven minutes of the quarter being scoreless, the score going into halftime would be 6-5 with Lincoln Memorial in the lead.
The third quarter would be LMU's highest scoring quarter, as the Railsplitters piece together a 4 goal scoring run, beginning with Conroy securing a brace with his second goal of the match with 11:34 remaining, with Jones tallying the assist.
Domenico Moscato would record his first goal of the match a minute later with 10:38 remaining, with Conroy posting the assist. The next five minutes were scoreless, as the next goal scored would be at 5:53 and 4:54 remaining as Conroy records his third and fourth goal of the match, both unassisted. With those being the last goals of the quarter, LMU would remain in the lead going into the fourth 10-5.
The fourth would be all Wheeling as they score the only three goals scored in the fourth: Rowe (Chase) with 9:37 remaining, Chase with 4:35 remaining, and Strong (Lavern) with 2:16 remaining. Despite the strong fourth quarter effort from Wheeling, Lincoln Memorial takes the win 10-8.
Conroy would lead in points on the day with 7 points for 4 goals and 3 assists, followed by Jones with 3 points for 2 goals and 1 assist. Moscato, Smith, Scholz, Burdette, Reid, and Winters would all finish with 1 points, as Moscato, Smith, Scholz, and Burdette all finish with 1 goal and Reid and Winters tally 1 assist each.
Haden Berry would lead the team in ground balls with 7 and won 15/18 face offs.
John Lombel would be the team-leader in caused turnovers with 3.
Jayden Herman would earn himself 12 saves.
As a team, Lincoln Memorial recorded 37 shots, with 27 being on goal, 12 saves, 14 successful clears, 36 ground balls, 16 won face offs, 13 caused turnovers, and 3 extra man opportunities.
With the win, LMU improves to 4-9 overall and remains 1-7 in conference play.
Their next match will be a week from today as they travel to Newberry, SC on Saturday, April 19th to face Newberry at 3 pm.
