Greeneville, TN – The Lincoln Memorial men's lacrosse team defeats the Tusculum Pioneers Wednesday afternoon 12-9 for their first SAC win of the season.
The Railsplitters put the first goal on the board within the first five minutes as
Koen Burdette records his first goal of the match with 11:45 remaining in the first quarter. Five minutes later, the Pioneers tie up the match as Royer (Bowen) scored with 5:56 remaining. LMU quickly responds and takes back the lead as
Calix Simonson tallies his first career goal with 5:19 remaining. Once again Tusculum ties up the match as Royer (Lyman) scores with 3:39 remaining. Right off the face-off, Burdette registers his second goal of the match with 3:11 remaining to help Lincoln Memorial regain the lead. The Pioneers even up the score as Bowen (Royer) scores their third goal with 1:58 remaining. The back-and-forth scoring continues as
Rhodes Conroy adds his first goal of the match with 1:51 remaining in the first quarter, with
Jenson Jones earning the assist. The Railsplitters are able to extend their lead as
Alex Winters scores his first goal of the match with 0:07 remaining. With Winters scoring the last goal of the quarter, the score going into the second quarter would be 5-3 with Lincoln Memorial in the lead.
LMU is quick to score in the second quarter as Conroy secures the brace with his second goal of the match with 14:23 remaining as
Alex Wegrzyn tallies the assist. Conroy increases his scoring to a hat trick as he records his third goal of the match with 7:45 remaining, unassisted, to make the score 7-3. The Pioneers add their first goal of the quarter as Mendez scores with 6:37 remaining in the second.
Jacob Scholz extends Lincoln Memorial's lead back to four as he tallies his first goal of the match with 4:33 remaining with
Ashton Wilson earning the assist. As a scoreless three minutes goes by, Bowen (Royer) adds another goal for Tusculum with 1:13 remaining in the second. With only five seconds left in the second quarter and the first half, Conroy tallies his fourth goal of the match. The score going into halftime would be 9-5 with Lincoln Memorial having the four-goal lead.
The third quarter was quiet for both teams as each team scores only one goal. The first goal of the quarter came from Tusculum as Fontenla (Hobday) adds their 6
th goal for the Pioneers with 9:10 remaining. The next goal wouldn't be until 0:09 remaining as
Gavin Reid records his first goal of the match to bring LMU to double-digits. The score going into the fourth and final quarter would be 10-6 with the Railsplitters in the lead.
Lincoln Memorial would score within two minutes of the fourth quarter as Winters records the brace with his second goal of the match with 13:59 remaining, with Conroy earning the assist. Tusculum shortens LMU's lead as Bowen adds a goal a minute later with 12:55 remaining. The Railsplitters extend their lead back to 5 goals as Reid registers his second goal of the match with 10:40 remaining as Wegrzyn tallies his second assist. The Pioneers respond with less than five minutes remaining as Hobday (Thomas) scores a goal with 4:54 remaining in the fourth. Tusculum records their first scoring run of the match as they score their 9
th goal, coming from Royer, with 3:51 remaining.
Conroy would finish the day leading in points with 5 for 4 goals and 1 assist. Reid, Winters, Burdette, and Wegrzyn would all finish with two points as Reid, Winters, and Burdette all recorded 2 goals each and Wegrzyn tallied 2 assists. Simonson, Scholz, Jones, Wilson, and Lombel all finished with 1 point each with Simonson and Scholz scoring 1 goal each and Jones, Wilson, and Lombel recording 1 assist each.
Haden Berry would finish the day leading in ground balls with 6, and Lombel would lead in caused turnovers with 5. Berry won 13 face offs, and
Jayden Herman recorded 10 saves.
As a team, Lincoln Memorial recorded 50 shots, with 31 being on goal,10 saves,18 face offs won, 18 successful clears, and 9 caused turnovers.
With the win, Lincoln Memorial improves to 3-8 overall and 1-6 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Their next match will be at home on Saturday, April 5
th against Wingate at 4 pm at LMU Lacrosse Complex.
