Men's Lacrosse Falls To #9 Wingate

Harrogate, TN – The Lincoln Memorial men's lacrosse team falls to the #9 Wingate Bulldogs Saturday evening 7-21.

The first two quarter were low scoring quarters for Lincoln Memorial. In the first quarter, the Bulldogs posted a 6-goal scoring run in the first 10 minutes of the quarter: Moran with 13:29 remaining, Butrico (Papach) with 11:33 remaining, Clark (Butrico) with 9:12 remaining, Spence with 8:07 remaining, Rupprecht with 7:51 remaining, and Arnold with 6:21 remaining. The Railsplitters added their first goal on the board with the help of Jacob Scholz recording is first goal of the match with 4:31 left in the first quarter, unassisted. Wingate would have the last say in the first quarter as Butrico (Moran) scores with 0:18 remaining, making the score 7-1 going into the second quarter of play.

The second quarter would end up being much like the first, with Wingate's Clark adding the first goal of the quarter. Three minutes later, Rhodes Conroy would make his debut into the match as he tallies his first goal of the match with 11:35 remaining, unassisted. The Bulldogs would then extend their lead by 4 more goals throughout the remainder of the quarter: Clark (Spence) with 11:17 remaining, Grant with 10:38 remaining, Papach with 10:00 remaining, and Clark (Spence) with 1:04 remaining. Despite that, Wingate would record the first 6 goals of the match until the 6 minute remaining mark: Goss with 11:07 remaining, Samson (Spence) with 10:26 remaining, Spence (Rupprecht) with 9:10 remaining, Clark (Papach) with 9:02 remaining, Butrico (Spence) with 7:21 remaining, and Butrico (Watson) with 6:42 remaining. LMU would rally up their first scoring run as they add three back-to-back goals coming from three different goal scorers. The first goal out of the three came from Brock Saunders at 5:46 remaining, with the assist coming from Jenson Jones. Jones would then score a goal himself with 0:31 remaining, unassisted. Less than 30 seconds later, Alex Wegrzyn would tally his first goal of the match with 0:04 remaining in the third. The score going into the final quarter would be 18-5 with the Bulldogs in the lead.

The fourth quarter would end up being the lowest scoring quarter for Wingate. At 14:09 remaining, Wingate's  Olvany added a goal. The Bulldogs would then score two more goals in the fourth: Cifreo (Bocketti) with 12:17 remaining, and Eggleton (Cifreo) with 10:38 remaining. LMU would put together two more goals in the last 4 minutes of the match, starting with Alex Winters registering a goal with 3:45 remaining, unassisted. About a minute later, Gavin Reid would record his first goal of the match with 2:59 remaining. Despite the strong defensive efforts and better offensive efforts from LMU, Wingate took the win 21-7.

Jones would finish the evening leading in points with 2 for 1 goal and 1 assist. Reid, Wegrzyn, Saunders, Winters, Scholz, and Conroy would all end up with 1 point each as they each scored 1 goal. Winters and Haden Berry would both lead in ground balls with 4 each, and Reid would be the team-leader in caused turnovers with 2. Jayden Herman and Connor Fitzgibbon each earned time in goal, with Herman recording 5 saves.

As a team, Lincoln Memorial recorded 34 shots, with 15 of them on goal, 16 successful clears, 27 ground balls, 12 won face offs, and 8 caused turnovers.

With the loss, LMU moves to 3-9 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

They will play their last non-conference match up of the season as they travel to Wheeling, WV on Saturday, April 12 to face Wheeling University at 2 pm.
