Salisbury, NC- Lincoln Memorial fell just short in both contests against Catawba in Salisbury, NC this weekend.Â
Catawba would be the first on the board in game one, finding two in the bottom of the second. LMU would answer quickly though, with
Gracie Palmer getting things started in the top of the third on a bunt single.
Anna Kate Reichter would follow it up, earning her second single of the day to give the Splitters two on with no one out.
Kristin Griffin would take full advantage, sending a shot over the left-center wall to give the team the 3-2 lead.
Hanna Bogoski and
Jordann Reagan would draw back-to-back walks in the at-bats after the homer,
Nicole Couvertiere's single being enough to score Reagan and make the lead 4-2. Catawba would plate another in the bottom half of the frame, making it 4-3. Neither team would be able to take advantage of their base runners for the next few innings, bringing it to the bottom of the seventh. Catawba's Carter would double and later score to tie things up, opening the door for the Indians to stay alive and eventually hit a walk-off home run to steal the win by a score of 4-7.
Game two would start with
Kristin Griffin getting aboard via hit-by-pitch in the top of the first. Griffin would move to second on contact from Bogoski then later cross home on an RBI single from Reagan to give LMU the 1-0 lead. Catawba would score in the bottom half of the inning, taking the edge back and making it 1-3 in favor of the Indians. Lincoln Memorial would strike again in the top of the third, Reicther and Griffin drawing consecutive walks to start the inning. Bogoski's single would score Reichter, Reagan stepping up next and hitting a sacrifice fly to cross Griffin and tie up the game. The Indians would plate two more of their own, retaking the lead 3-5 through three innings.
Alyssa Williams would make that 4-5 in the very next frame, homering to left-center for a leadoff solo shot. Another run from the Indians in the bottom half of the fourth would put the deficit back to two runs. It would be Bogoski stepping in the box to lead off the top of the fifth, sending another hit over the left-center wall and putting the Splitters back in striking distance. Catawba would crack open the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on three hits to make it 5-9 and just out of reach of a Lincoln Memorial comeback.Â
The losses move Lincoln Memorial to 26-15 (10-8) on the year as Catawba improves to 18-20 (8-10). LMU will return home to the Dorothy Neely in Harrogate on Wednesday, April 9th, for a 1 PM/3 PM doubleheader against UVA Wise.Â
