Dahlonega, GA – The Lincoln Memorial women's soccer team fell to the #10 University of North Georgia Nighthawks Wednesday evening 1-5.
The Railsplitters started attacking right away as
Jade Brown took their first shot on goal of the match in the 1
st minute, saved. Possession juggled for the next ten minutes, then UNG took advantage of their first shot opportunity of the match with Drew scoring a goal in the 11
th minute, assisted by Diaz. North Georgia continued to push their attacking third as they took a shot on goal in the 15
th minute, giving
Emma Cooke her first save of the day, followed by the Nighthawks' second goal of the day by Drew in the 16
th minute to make the score 0-2.
Edie Wilds produced an opportunity for LMU with a shot on goal in the 17
th minute, saved. North Georgia kept pressing forward with two shots, both in the 17
th minute, one saved by Cooke and one wide. LMU's defense continued to be pressured by UNG as they record their third goal of the match by Drew in the 21
st minute to make the score 0-3. Lincoln Memorial cut off the Nighthawk's scoring streak as
Hannah Stafford passed the ball to
Sophia Berglund, and she fired a shot from outside the 18-yard box to the top right corner, out of the goalkeeper's reach into the back of the net to make the score 1-3. The ball continued to go back-and-forth as North Georgia fired a shot in the 33
rd minute, saved and LMU's Stafford took a shot in the 35
th minute, also saved. The Railsplitters started to push more offensively as
Maya Patel shot in the 38
th minute, high. UNG attempted to extend the lead with a shot in the 41
st minute, wide.The score going into the second half was 1-3 with UNG in the lead.
North Georgia started the shot opportunities right away as they took a shot in the 48
th minute, saved by Cooke, the 53
rd minute, saved by Cooke, in the 57
th minute, wide, the 58
th minute, high, and the 61
st minute, wide. UNG continued to stay on the attack with a shot in the 70
th minute, saved by Cooke, followed by their fourth goal of the day shot by Krazewski in the 76
th minute. The Nighthawks had a couple more shot attempts, and one of those went in the back of the net with Wheeler scoring in the 81
st minute to make the score 1-5. Cooke recorded two more saves from North Georgia shots until the end of the match. North Georgia took the win 1-5.
Berglund had the lone goal of the match for the Railsplitters, with Stafford recording the assist. Patel, Stafford, Brown, Berglund, Wilds, and Filsner all registered one shot, with one shot on goal coming from Brown, Berglund, Wilds, and Stafford. Cooke played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded 11 saves over 24 shots faced.
As a team, Lincoln Memorial recorded six shots, with four being on goal, and two corner kicks.
With the loss, LMU moves to 2-2-1 overall and North Georgia moves to 4-0-1 overall.
The team will play their final road match of September as they travel to Salisbury, NC on Saturday, September 20th to face their second SAC opponent #11 Catawba College at 3:30 pm.
