Baseball falls to Hillsdale behind late surge

Harrogate, TN – In a game that featured multiple lead changes and a high-octane offensive finish, the Lincoln Memorial University baseball team fell 11-7 to Hillsdale College on Friday afternoon at Lamar Hennon Field. Despite a dominant middle-inning stretch, the Railsplitters could not withstand a six-run Hillsdale outburst in the final frame.

Hillsdale jumped out to an early lead with single runs in the first and second innings, but the Railsplitters pitching staff, led by starter Payton Armour, settled in to keep the game within reach. Armour provided a workhorse performance, tossing seven innings and striking out seven while allowing only three runs.

The Lincoln Memorial offense found its spark in the bottom of the second when Gabe Gray launched a solo home run to center field, putting the Railsplitters on the board. The momentum shifted fully in the fifth inning. After Caleb Jordan was hit by a pitch and Brady Morse singled, Peyton Mullannix delivered a clutch two-RBI single to right field. The Railsplitters extended the lead further when Josh Marmo tripled to the gap in center, driving in two more, followed by an Ronny Matti RBI single to cap a five-run inning.

Trailing 7-5 entering the ninth, Hillsdale mounted a massive comeback against the Lincoln Memorial bullpen. The Chargers tallied five hits and drew three walks in the inning, scoring six runs to seize an 11-7 advantage. The Railsplitters looked to respond in the bottom of the ninth after a leadoff walk by Mullannix, but the Hillsdale reliever closed the door to secure the win.

The Railsplitters finished the day with 13 total hits. Morse led the way with three hits, including a double, while Matti also recorded a three-hit day with two RBIs. Gray scored three times and collected two hits, while Mullannix and Marmo each drove in a pair of runs. Armour threw 90 pitches in his seven innings of work before turning the game over to the bullpen. Josh Jeffcoat was credited with the loss.

The Railsplitters will look to bounce back tomorrow as they continue their weekend series at home.
