Men's Lacrosse Falls In Close Overtime Battle To Catawba

Harrogate, TN – Lincoln Memorial men's lacrosse falls in a close overtime battle to the #16 Catawba Indians Saturday afternoon 11-12.

Catawba began the scoring for this match by adding a goal with 13:06 remaining, but Lincoln Memorial responded with a goal to tie the match up at 1-1, thanks to Jacob Scholz with 8:58 remaining. The Catawba Indians then went on a three-goal scoring run to end the quarter: with 3:54 remaining, with 2:34 remaining, and with 0:08 remaining. The score going into quarter two 1-4.

Lincoln Memorial came out more aggressive offensively in the second, but Catawba scored first with 11:04 remaining. The back-and-forth scoring began as the Railsplitters added their first goal of the quarter by Domenico Moscato with 11:41 remaining. The Catawba Indians then responded with another goal with 11:04 remaining, and a minute later Beckett O'Shea got the ball in the back of the net with 10:00 remaining. Catawba scored their last goal of the quarter with 6:30 remaining, then LMU went on a 4-goal scoring run. The first goal was scored by O'Shea with 3:17 remaining, with Lucas Barsauskas earning the assist. Alex Wegrzyn followed with 2:04 remaining as Gavin Reid tallied the assist, and Jenson Jones scored the third with 0:15 remaining, assisted by Wegrzyn. Reid scored the last goal of the quarter with 2 seconds remaining to give the Railsplitters the 7-6 advantage going into halftime.

Lincoln Memorial got things started in the third quarter as Moscato scored with 14:01 remaining, assisted by Wegrzyn, with Catawba responding with a goal of their own seconds later with 13:46 remaining. Then the Railsplitters scored a pair of goals with 12:08 and 5:46 remaining, by Reid (Jones) and O'Shea, respectively. The Catawba Indians then scored three goals to tie up the match 10-10 going into the fourth: with 3:28 remaining, 0:30 remaining and 0:11 remaining.

There was only two goals scored in the fourth, the first by LMU by Reid with 4:48 remaining. Catawba tied up the match 11-11 to go into overtime with 4:03 remaining.
The Catawba Indians got the golden goal in overtime with 2:16 remaining to get the 11-12 win.

Reid led in points with four for three goals and one assist, followed by O'Shea (3 goals) and Wegrzyn (1 goal, 2 assists) with three points each. Moscato and Jones both finished with two points, as Moscato scored two goals and Jones tallied one goal and one assist. Scholz added one goal and Barsauskas recorded one assist.

O'Shea led in shots with eight, Brixten McKenzie led in ground balls with four, and Moscato led in caused turnovers with six. Goalkeeper Jayden Herman recorded 12 saves on the afternoon.

The team took 36 shots, with 21 being on goal, 25 successful clears, 33 ground balls, and 11 won face offs.

With the loss, Lincoln Memorial drops to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play, and Catawba improves to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The team's next game will be in a week on Saturday, March 14th as they travel to Hartsville, SC to face Coker at 3 pm.
