Harrogate, TN - Lincoln Memorial falls to the Newberry Wolves Saturday afternoon 11-17 on Senior Day. Seven Seniors were honored for their contributions to the men's lacrosse program:
Gavin Reid,
Dakota Ayres,
Connor Blondin,
Tim Carlson,
Jayden Herman,
Windle Oakley, and
Jenson Jones.
The first quarter was back-and-forth, as Newberry scored first with 13:02 remaining, followed by a Railsplitter goal by
Jenson Jones with 12:49 remaining, assisted by
Brixten McKenzie. The Wolves then added two more goals with 11:16 and 10:51 remaining, then LMU's
Shane Psaltis scored with 9:49 remaining, unassisted. The pattern continued as the Wolves recorded two more goals for the next eight minutes until Lincoln Memorial scored the last goal of the quarter by
Domenico Moscato with 1:18 remaining, making the score 3-5 going into the second quarter.
Newberry started out strong in the second, as they went on a three-goal run throughout the first five minutes of the quarter.
Gavin Reid scored the first goal for the Railsplitters with 8:16 remaining, but the Wolves responded 30 seconds later to extend their lead to five goals. Lincoln Memorial finished out the quarter on a positive note as they added one more goal to the scoreboard before halftime as Reid scored with 5:09 remaining. Newberry scored one more before the end of the quarter making the score 5-10 going into halftime with Newberry in the lead.
The third started out the same, with the Wolves scoring two goals within the first four minutes before LMU would get their first goal on the board by Moscato, with the assist coming from
Alex Wegrzyn with 7:37 remaining. The back-and-forth pattern started woth Newberry scoring with 3:50 remaining, followed by another Moscato goal for LMU with 2:43 remaining. The Wolves finished out the quarter with their 14
th goal of the match with 1:23 remaining, giving them the 7-14 lead going into the final frame.
The fourth quarter was the highest scoring quarter from Lincoln Memorial as they scored back-to-back goals with 13:29 remaining by Reid (assisted by Psaltis) and with 12:45 remaining by Jones (assisted by Moscato). The rest of the quarter was alternating goals by each team as Newberry scored first with 10:28 remaining, followed by a Railsplitter goal by Reid with 4:58 remaining. The pattern continued as the Wolves scored their last goal with 3:24 remaining, and Lincoln Memorial's Jones scoring with 3:20 remaining off of an
Brixten McKenzie assist. Newberry took the 11-17 victory.
Reid and Moscato both led with four points as Reid scored four goals and Moscato added three goals and one assist. Jones finished with three points for three assists. Psaltis and McKenzie both had two points, with McKenzie recorded two assists and Psaltis added one of each. O'Shea and Wegrzyn rounded out the points with one point for one assist.
Reid led in shots and shots on goal with 11 and seven points, respectively. McKenzie led in ground balls with five and
Noah Laurel led with three caused turnovers.
Jayden Herman recorded 14 saves. Â
As a team, Lincoln Memorial took 32 shots, with 22 being on goal, 25 ground balls, 14Â saves, 25 successful clears, and 13 won face offs.
With the loss, Lincoln Memorial drops to 7-6 overall and 2-5 in conference play, and Newberry improves to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the SAC.
The team's next match is on the road as they travel to Wingate, NC to face Wingate on Saturday, April 18
th at 1 pm.
